Unable to access Broadband or dial up

Unable to access Broadband or dial up

Was getting error PPP no protocols configured 47-Dun 0720 now
Getting error Authentication failure. (Error: 47-DUN-0691 0x8410105B)

I’m in the library at the moment hoping someone can help me. I have not been able to access broadband at home since Monday afternoon, and not getting anywhere with AOL tech help (no surprise there).

My system is Windows XP 5.1 sp2, 980mb Ram Aol9.0 Silver Bt voyager 190 adsl , have 20gb free disk space

Summary of events

On Monday I tried to install my old Agfa scanner onhome PC. As it is old software it came up with ‘director player needs 3mb of virtual Mem’. Googled and found I needed to change Virtual memory paging file size to intial 500mb and max 500mb.
Did this, installed software. Really chuffed to get scanner to work as no drivers for XP but just told it run Windows 95 compatibility.

Then my problems started :-

Tried to access AOL and get ‘PPP no protocols configured’ message. As have had this message before with AOL (since moved to dialbb thing) I wasn’t too worried and thought would be able to get on later. However 24 hours later no change.
No problems with modem – all lights on and Ethernet light flashes when try to signon to AOL.
So phoned AOL and they talked me through adding a new network connection. At the the last step of the network wizard I got ‘unable to create the specified connection. This can be caused by insufficient memory or disk space’. At this point AOL said clear some space /add some memory and basically seem to have washed their hands of the problem.

I also noticed when I went into network connections that I got this message -
‘ The network connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network Adapters on your machine. Please make sure the the network connection service is enabled and running’

I have changed virtual mem setting back to 1440 and 2880 and now deleted Scanner software.
Now the AOL message I’m getting is Authentication failure. (Error: 47-DUN-0691 0x8410105B). As the message was different from before I phoned AOL again but got same response from tech people.

So I thought I’d try dial up so could at least check emails and maybe search a resolution. Never used dial up on that machine but put in my ancient tesco dial up phone number and got ‘connected to remote computer, verifying name and password and then unable to establish connection. Had a look to see what dial up disks I had, found a tiscali one – it got as far as remote computer, verifying name and password and then got message no ‘PPP control protocol configured’.

If I go into PC Wizard it tells me I have
Network Yes, RAS no. If I then double click Network it says connection type disabled. I’m assuming this might be where my problems are ?

Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet adapter, speed 100Mbp/s , connected Yes.

Thanks if you have read this far. Hope someone can help.

Just wanted to add I have no system backup I can restore to ( yes, i know - one of those things I've been meaning to investigate/action)

    You could try systems restore.

Roll back to a blue date on your systems restore calendar.

    More info here.

I create a systems restore point before loading any software/drivers on my PC. Yes it has been used on many occasions too. Better safe than sorry.

    Pimpers.

    Hi elektra,

sounds like you've done a proper job here! ;)

I didn't quite follow your progress completely.

When you go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections are all of your network devices listed? Do any of these say Disabled in the Status column?

How are you connecting to AOL? Is it via a broadband router which handles the connection and you're having difficulty connecting to that, or do you have a USB broadband modem which plugs directly into your PC and therefore your PC handles the connection?

I keep getting the error codes that your getting. It's driving me nuts

Bearing in mind I'mnot 100% sure what I'm doing, I just go into the settings bit on the sign on page abd switch the dot to broadband. It's always on dial up. Then it looks for the DSL thing and normally connects up.

Have had to re start the PC a couple of times before doing the above and it being successful though.

So you are not alone and going by this board there are loads of miffed AOL customers at the moment.

I'm with you on that! Can anyone recommend another provider that preferably doesnt have clowns in their call centres!!!!!!
  • Just typing this when I lost the connection to AOL. There was a recorded message on the Customer Service (?) to say that they were aware of the problems and were trying to fix them, so no matter what tech help (?) say it's definitely at AOL end. When I phoned Customer Service to cancel they said it was a BT problem and that all BT line ISPs were affected. What I would like to know is, is that correct is it yet more AOL spin.

Take a look at www.ispreview.co.uk to get listing of all ISPs with reviews by long suffering customers.

no network connections displayed I get this message -

but the connections are there- I can see them in PC wizard

Thanks for replies. Good luck to those switching from AOL - i was on AOL dialup for years hardly any problems. I too would initiate a switch but at the moment I need to know whether I have messed up computer completely whilst trying to fix problem. i.e using Aol fix it which tried to re-install network adapers.

Husband getting frustrated that he can't logon at home and son will be needing it to do homework.
I don't have Windows disks ( Pc bought off ebay). I will have a look though and see if there is a system restore point although knowing my luck it will be before ebay seller loaded software.

    I found this
don't know how the icons in network connections folder went missing but i now know how to get them back. This should work, Verify the networking services setting:
    a. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
    b. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    c. Click Networking Services, and then click Details. Verify that Simple TCP/IP Services is turned on.

and tried it but it needs windows xp pro disks.

so now I don't really know how to move forward.
