Advice on calling spain

This is my first post, so please be gentle with me if I've done something wrong.
My hubby is going to be in the wilds of Valencia, Spain for about three months. He won't have access to the internet most of the time, or to a land line. I've been looking into ways we can keep in touch for as little money as possible. I have found the Rabtel site but what I am not clear on is, would he need a Spanish mobile for this to work or would a UK one do?
If we need to buy a Spanish mobile / sim card, which one should we choose and how do we find out what is available? I have no idea of tarrifs or deals, or how to register a sim card. There is also the problem of network coverage - some areas in Valencia are not well served.
Can anyone advise me on what our best options would be?
Thanks in anticipation,

MHF,
This is a reply that I posted previously to a similar question:
1.Get an O2 PAYG sim card (for free obviously) and pop it in a cheap unlocked phone.
2.Put £20 credit on it.
3.Text "SPAIN" to 21300. That costs you £5 of your credit. Then £5 each month.
4.All calls made to standard UK numbers are now 25ppm.
5.Texts to anywhere in the world are 25p each.
6.IT IS FREE TO RECEIVE CALLS ON THIS PHONE WHILE ROAMING IN SPAIN.
7.When your hubby wants to chat to you/friends/relatives, he drops them a text asking them to call him.
Point 6 is most important for you. It means that you can call your hubby out of your mobile's inclusive minutes and not incur any additional costs. Effectively, keeping in touch will cost no more than £5/month......and then the window licker said to me...0 -

Its subject to an overall cap of 1000 minutes/month applies for calls made and received

If you don't have a contract phone at home, then get a second O2 Pay & Go SIM and put his number in the favourite numbers deal at £5 a month

If he needs to make a lot of calls to other people as well, then maybe use a callback service with the O2 SIM, or maybe get a local SIM as well, the choice depending whether he wants to call mainly local or UK numbers. Lebara or Happy Movil would be good for int'l, Yoigo for local, or perhaps Vodafone Spain is useful with its 60 for 1 minutes option, with a callthrough access like DialNow for UK-bound calls0
