Margaret - if you still think you have a virus on the laptop, you could download the installation program of an anti-virus program (like AVG, Avast!) on your main PC, copy it to floppy/CD/USB pen drive and then copy it into your laptop without having to connect the laptop to the Internet.

Run the installation program on your laptop and then do a virus scan.

    Thanks Wombat.
I already have AVG on my laptop and also Microsoft ant-virus and spybot and they're all coming back clear!

Sorry if I've missed it, but do you have a firewall installed? And which browser are you using? Have seen cases where trojans get triggered through IE.

The first priority, if you don't already have one, is getting a firewall installed. Something malicious could be getting in which is triggering a trojan or virus. A good firewall is Kerio Personal Firewall. It's light and easy to use.

It does sound like some form of virus. AVG and Avast are good but don't always get the highest success rates in reviews. If you can get hold of it somehow (ie through a friend) download a trial version of Kaspersky, it's probably one of if not the best for hunting down trojans. NOD32 is my favourite of all the av software.

And then finally, maybe consider investing in a decent router. £50-60 should get you something like the Netgear 834DG (I forget the exact model no) which will have an inbuilt port blocker and NAT.

I can't connect to the internet or if I do I get kicked off almost immediately. I had 15 trojan horses on my laptop last week and though I'm scanning everyday and it's all clear I'm sure the laptop has a virus. I have a PC and that connects no bother.
I have microsoft ant-virus which scans every morning at 6a.m. and AVG which scans at 8a.m. This morning AVG found 2 trojan horses on my dialler.
How can I clean the laptop?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Are you sure that Windows is up to date? Windows Updates normally stop the most popular trojans.

Can you tell us what other security measures you have, apart from 2 AVs?

Now, I have the two that I mentioned plus the Updates and nothing else! I disabled my anti-virus to allow a wav file to go and forgot to enable them again. I think that's when the trouble began.

  • It might be your firewall blocking you connection. Go to Start> Control Panel> Netwrok and Internet Connections > Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab and see which ones are clicked and not clicked.

I had a similar problem a while ago, and it was a virus, but as I couldn't get on the internet I couldn't check but then I came up with a dead simple solution.

I can't promise that you have the same problem as I had, but the problem that I had was triggered by Microsoft Internet Explorer. As one might expect most viruses are written against Microsoft - so the solution use another web browser (at least until the problem is fixed).

I switched to firefox until the virus was sorted out (and have never changed back) - only problem with firefox is it doesn't allow me to search mse for some reason!?! Otherwise I far prefer it to IE.

OK so how do you get another browser if you can't get on the internet - simplest way is to either download it on your desktop - or alternatively you can buy any computer magazine and they should include at least one alternative on the cover dvd/cd.

Hope this may be of some help.

Not a very constructive piece of advice.
