Help changing from contract to Pay as U Go
Options
I wonder if anyone can help me. I want to change from my contract phone (with BT) to a pay-as-you go service (any service provider). I am wishing to retain my same number, is this possible??
Also do I need to unlock my phone to allow pay-as-you-go simms in the phone. I'm new to all this so any help is much appreciated.
Cheers

To keep your number - just ring BT mobile and ask for your PAC code you can then transfer it to your chosen network on PAYG. Here's a decent guide -

As to your phone - it may already be unlocked - BT mobile seem to send out a lot of unlocked phones. Just try a decent SIM in it and see if it works. If not, simply post your make/model of phone here and folks will point you in the right direction.
There are a lot of different options at the moment - if you're a low user it may still be cheaper to use a contract than PAYG. Lets know what your requirements are.
SIMS can be bought or O2 give away free PAYG - for £2-3 off the net where as a shop will charge £10.0 -
Thanks for your help, much apprieciated.
My phone is an Erickson t610 and I don't use it that much, just for quick chats, emergencies etc so paying £20 a month on a contract doesn't make much sence. Any suggestions for a cheap pay-as-you-go company?
Thanks

Tesco Mobile seems to be a good deal at the moment
£7.49 for a sim only off the Tesco website, calls are 20p any network any time, texts 10p, and you also can pick three favourite numbers half price
I think you will be hard pressed to find much better than 10p peak rate anywhere, never mind cross network calls, although obviously this plan will work best if you do mainly contact only 2 or 3 numbers, and for low users.
I've been on Orange for years, just come off contract myself too (been with them for seven years, only ever had one upgrade handset, and they wanted £130 for the new Sony Ericcson handset because I have only been spending £25 the last couple of months!).
Although Orange extras (bit like O2 bolt ons) are quite a good deal, you are still spending a minimum amount to get the good deals. If you don't use much, it goes to waste.
So far, Tesco is the only PAYG option I have seriously considered, in fact I was on this forum to check out if there were any posts about it.0
