How can someone buy my car this weekend and not have the money bounce?

I've finally found a buyer (hopefully) for my merc for £12k. They live in Yorkshire and Cyprus and want a car for the UK. We live in Scotland - so I presume we are meeting halfway somewhere at the weekend.

Is a bankers draft enough to hand the car over, or if it's cash - how do I know it's not forged?

I've waited so long for a buyer - now I'm suspicious of everyone!!

If you are meeting on a Saturday try to meet at a location close to your bank. Try and find a branch that is open on Saturday and go with the buyer, with cash/bankers draft and put it straight into your account. Make sure you get a receipt as well.

Well there are security implications of carrying round £12K of cash on the streets and having it in your house.

If you are accepting a bankder draft then make sure you know what to look for.
    Ask your bank for advice.

Good idea about going to a bank on a Saturday.

Basically I see it as your buyers problem to get "cleared funds" to you as long as you specify that.

Easter Saturday is no differnt to any other Saturday, but obviously you'll need to find a bank that opens on Saturday as I don't think it's all of them.
Check in Advance and note that some are only open in the morning.

If they pay cash, point out to them that customs HAVE to be notified cos they have more than 9000 in cash on them.
As for them living in Cyprus, I've sold a few cars to people over there. Get a full address for both of thier homes. Plus copies of driving licence to validate it too...

If you can't get to the bank, put the cash in the freezer or attic until Tuesday
  • can you accept a CHAPS payment into your bank? it goes in on the same day and it can't be cancelled so you won't have to worry about a fraudulent payment

I did think about CHAPS but I'm pretty sure it isn't a banking day in that respect.
The branch counters might be open and if you paid in cash it would be accepted but it wouldn't show up as being paid into your account until Monday (in this case Tuesday as Monday is a bank holiday).
