as the owner its up to you to keep track of the MOT date, a car is not road legal without an MOT, you also cant get it taxed beyond the date of the MOT expiring. please book the MOT as soon as possible and get it done - as DVLA computer system is now set up to recognise MOT problems with the new MOT certs.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. I think a lot of the replies are getting away from the original point. The simple fact is that any PLG vehicle 3 years old or over requires a valid MOT cert. All the MOT does is to certify that at the time of the test the vehicle was roadworthy (that is why you shouldn't assume that a car that has a current MOT is still roadworthy). If you use a car (over 3 years old)without an MOT your insurance is invalid, it's as simple as that. Any insurance company will ask for one if the car is in an accident. The Police will also prosecute for no MOT, so it is also an offence under the Road Taffic Act.0

I also wrote my car off when there was no MOT ~ wasnt prosecuted and the insurance paid out.

i just want to say a few years ago my MOT was 6 weeks late and i was contacted several times from the garage who had MOTed my car from new.. i had had major abdo surgery and was not medicaly fit to drive, i told them several times DVLA were fine as car was taxed and off the road, my insurance was valid for fire and theft and to drive to the MOT station when i was medically fit. the weekly hassle from the garage was not because the car was not MOTed but because they did not want to miss out on my buisness!! when i got the the go ahead to drive again i booked the car in and used public transport untill they could fit the car in for service and MOT.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. HI
You do need an MOT once a car is 3 years old - you don't get a prompt from the DVLA (you do for road tax but never for MOT).
You will need to get it asap as your insurance is now invalid - if you're in an accident (even if it's not your fault) you will be held liable as you are driving illegally.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...
In Northern Ireland its 4 years - and we get a prompt
ETA. I was still two months late with mine - cos they were busy. You can only get your MOT at GVT testing centres of which there arent too many0 -
Thanks all who confirmed what I thought. Got one done the day after I posted after the helpful confirmations I received here.
As for saintjanet, think you need to get your halo reshone. My original post stated I wanted confirmation my knowledge was correct and that the law hadn't changed since I bought the car, female need for reassurance coming out.
there is more to [strike]owning a vehicle than just driving it[/strike] posting on forums than being unhelpful ,i am constantly amazed at peoples [strike] lack of knowledge[/strike] inability to read the very clear statement at the right of the page starting with Pls be nice and ending with to all moneysavers.0 -
SaintJan needs to feel a bit 'saintly' and above the rest of us at times. She needs to feel perfect, whereas, I already am.......Genie

It is not a legal requirement to brush ones teeth, however having an MOT is and is the only renewable thing I can think off that you are not reminded of. Probably only a matter of time though as they will probably be fining us for not renewing, as it is all computerised now, like they do with the tax disc, .
Good to see the no MOT = no insurance myth is still going strong!!0 -
I'm a bit confused.
the only reason I know my car was due an MOT was the Road Tax reminder told me so.
(Do they know how useless I am when it comes to cars, so made a special note of reminding me?)0
