Please confirm I need an MOT

I think you'll find this relates to a motoring offence. It's nothing to do with the insurance.
I worked in the car insurance business for 8 years (although it was a good few years ago) and there was nothing then that said you were not insured without a valid MOT. In fact, I handled a number of claims from motorists who's MOT had run out. The only affect was in instances where the car was a write off and the insurer would offer a lower than normal offer, because the vehicle condition was subject to question.
Things may have changed in recent years, but there are lots of times when people claim you are not covered for this and that and in many cases it's simply not accurate.
The only way to know is to check the individual policy terms and these do vary from company to company.
Exactly as Tucker says.
Some Policies are stringent and mention the MOT as a requirement. Others do not.
In the event of an insurance claim you will generally find that the older motorist who forgets to MOT will probably be let off and additional premium or payout reduction but the younger motorist is more likely to have cover withdrawn or pay a financial penalty. It does seem a little harsh that you dont get a reminder to get an MOT, it surely wouldnt cost them that much to send out a reminder for the 1st mot0

Give the poor person a break!!
After three years of driving , day in and day out, it's hardly surprising that after three years to the day of registration, you have to suddenly remember to do something that you possibly haven't ever had to do before!!
I take it that you have never forgotten anyones Birthday??0 -

I think insurance policies normally state your car must be in a roadworthy condition. An MOT merelt certifies that it is/is not in a roadworthy condition at the time of testing. However if you dont get it done expect your insurer to wriggle out of any large claim by stating they dont believe your car was roadworthy as it wasnt recently tested.matched betting: £879.63

Including one of our friends who works for VOSA who went a whole year without an MOT ! And OH who realised 3 weeks ago his MOT had run out in October and he is a mechanic
ETA : Our friend from VOSA says no MOT is a civil offence and won't invalidate your insurance , just cause you a few problems .Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

I think a lot of the replies are getting away from the original point. The simple fact is that any PLG vehicle 3 years old or over requires a valid MOT cert. All the MOT does is to certify that at the time of the test the vehicle was roadworthy (that is why you shouldn't assume that a car that has a current MOT is still roadworthy). If you use a car (over 3 years old)without an MOT your insurance is invalid, it's as simple as that. Any insurance company will ask for one if the car is in an accident. The Police will also prosecute for no MOT, so it is also an offence under the Road Taffic Act.0
