Thanks..............OH tried it this morning on our lad's dvd player (only a cheap one) and it works a treat so he's gone off to woolworths to get one from there. Our neighbour bought one last week and says it works fine.

Got new dvd recorder from woolworths............worked a treat. Now we've got problems with the video part of the original dvd/vcr recorder.
The tape that was in there made a sort of whistling noise half way through recording something and playing back. Assumed it was a well worn tape so tried another one today..........picture perfect but no volume at all. Popped another video in (not pre-recorded) and the picture was also perfect but no sound. OH checked wires and all sorts and can't fathom it out.
Could it be that the video has also given up the ghost ?
Or shall I get a TV repair chappie out on Tuesday in case OH hasn't got the wires all in properly (it is a bit like spaghetti junction !)

Sorry to bang on about this but its really weird and a bit beyond mine or OH's understanding.
Now the VCR will work find (record, play, picture and sound ok) providing the new DVD player is disconnected from the TV !
We've currently got TV, VCR/DVD recorder (dvd part defunct),FREEVIEW BOX, and new DVD player.
Why do we have to keep unplugging the DVD player in order to use the VCR ? Is it because we now have an extra item added to it all (new DVD player ?)
Can't seem to get hold of repair chappie for love nor money at present and OH has looked at scart leads till he's more confused than ever.
