Stocks and Shares ISAs-Where to start?

Hi,
I've been putting into cash isas for a few years, and pretty much have a good understanding of the rules, having had fixed rates/variable rates and transfers during that time.
Next year, I'll probably be putting my £3600 into a barclays tax haven, which is variable at 6.5% for 1 year.
I'd really like to start looking into stocks and shares isas, particularly with the ailing stock market at the moment, but really don't know where to start. I've been to various websites such as hargreaves and lansdown and fidelity to try to get a basis for what to do, but it's a subject with such a HUGE choice, I must admit I'm struggling to know where to start.
Are there any pointers for beginners?
btw, I understand the difference between mini and maxi isas, it's more to do with the investment side of mini isas that I'm interested in.
Sorry if this sounds like a lazy post, but any advice would be helpful.
