Have recently moved to a new flat and the estimate to uprade the communal system to provide an extra feed for Sky + is £300! In my previous property I had Sky+ I am quite happy with the free to air content, but I do miss the record features.

I am looking to buy a PVR, anyone care to comment?

I have heard some good reviews about http://www.laskys.com/tv_and_dvd/free_view/digital_tv_recorders/humax_pvr9200t_b.html
I have heard some bad reviews about http://www.laskys.com/tv_and_dvd/free_view/digital_tv_recorders/thomson_dti6300_25.html
I have heard this is cheap but not so good

The new TOPFIELD TF5810PVR looks very good, but pricey. Is it worth they cash

Only really used Humax and I've found it to be excellent.

Humax 9200 is the best around it isbetter than Sky+

it can record 2 channels and let you watch a 3rd! (it does sometimes restrict the third channel but you can always view something)

it lets you browse through the full EPG without restrictions when you are recording items a feature i find annoying with the sky +

if you have any Q's on the 9200 let me know

The series record feature is really useful as well. I normally had to set it for my mum's programmes but now with the series feature after the upgrade I hardly have to intervene at all.

Humax, for sure, now with the latest software does pretty much everything a sky+ box does

Somewhere in MSE is a link to the refurb ones direct from Humax - a bargain!

No probs with my Topfield TF5800PVR. It has 250GB harddrive, but you can put a bigger one in if you like, seeing as the latest has a 500GB harddrive.

If you only have one sat feed just now, get a dreambox. you'll obviously only be able to record the channel you're watching (or channels on the same mux? that should be possible but I'm not sure about it) but you'll still have a proper sky PVR, with all the sky channels.

I gather that setting up a Dreambox to pick up the free to view channels that still need an decryption card is a bit techy...

You could also use a Phantom+ little £30 gadget that adds to an ordinary Sky box and turns it into a record-1-channel-at-a-time PVR using either your VCR or DVD recorder. Setting a recording from the Sky box becomes a 2 button press operation, select proggy from schedule then press the button for Autoview.

I'd like to know if these work well or not myself as there are occasions where recording from the old Sky box would be handy.

I don't think this would solve my problem?

Please be advised, I have a Sky + box. I could get that enabled to record the channel I am watching free with more than one premium channel or pay Sky £10 per month.
