Cooking steaks is a last minute job, and it'll get smoky unless you clean the pan out. You could do 2 steaks in a pan at a time, sizes of pans and steaks dependant of course. For 7 adults that could get you quite hot and sweaty at the last moment.
I'm having people over on the Saturday - I think I'm going with roasting a couple of chooks. Not sure yet whether I'll be doing the traditional trimmings or a cous cous salad, or a normal salad with baked spuds.
I think some sort of roast is the way to go..... have fun whatever you decide though.0 -
Making steak for nine people all at the same time might be a bit tricky. What about a cold roast beef and some nice salads? Jacket pots would also be easy enough.0

steak is quite fussy for that many people. What about a couple of roast chooks and roast new potatoes/ baked spuds? Shouldn't take too much effort.0

robpw----suggestion for lasange is a good one, if you have quite alot coming round. I would prepare it on the morning, pop in the oven an hour before and serve with garlic bread colelaw & green salad.
another idea would be to make chilli in the slow cook, then put bowls of grated cheese, guacole, sour cream with it on top and serve with jackets
all you have to do then is get the jackets out of the oven and everyone can help themselves to the rest, would make it cheap and also stress free for you:D'If you judge people, you have no time to love them'

I would be traditional and do a roast. How about a small turkey as there are nine people? And maybe trifle for pud? That could be made the day before.
Roast dinner doesn't have to be fiddly if you plan ahead. The veg can be peeled the night before and put on as and when required.I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

Has anyone suggested turkey? Do it like a Christmas dinner - the grandparents will love it!
Edit: Snap! My post took so long to go through that you just beat me to it.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

if i was cooking for 7 plus i would do a kind of finger buffet - things like strips of chicken, potato skins, crispy mushroom, spring rolls, garlic bread, cucumber, toms, carrot sticks etc so that everyone could have a plate on their knee and help themselves as many times as they like - not particularly money saving but i just open the packets and bung everything in the oven - prepare salad and open the dips! The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o
