Alternative to Virgin Media

Has anyone got any recommendations as an alternative to Virgin Media. My broadband is expensive in comparison to other providers and I want to change if possible.

I'd quite like to get the BT Home hub but it's over £100 to get reconnected. Has anyone found a way round this expensive reconnection charge?

Thanks

I was very disappointed that SKY advertised an excellent package that included TV channels, reduced price Sky+ box and upto 8md broadband for £21 a month - £16 for one tve channel and a fiver for the broadband - however when I checked online they added on and extra £17 per month for the Mid Broadband - it seems I live in the wrong area. I don’t quite understand why there is a difference - I thought Sky used the same wires that BT supply and use for their broadband connection??

sky put their own LLU kit in some exchanges (70-80% of them) this allows them to run the service much cheaper, supposedly subsidided by the tv subs. those isps selling on bts network have to pay about £10/month to bt for each connection (plus office costs, and advertising, and CS, and backhaul and in some cases free modem and connection and computer), which explains why the cheaper isps have a very poor reputation for CS and throttling, corners must be cut. the isps with the best reputations are not the cheaper ones for good reason.

That's interesting guys thanks for your comments. The main reason we switched from BT was a poor quality line in the past, but eventually they came round and renewed the lines in the area. Of course ours was missed out as we we're on Blueyonder/Virgin.

We want BT because it was only the line quality that put us off in the past. I just wonder if there is a way round paying the hefty reconnection fee?

Well as the saying goes "you don't get if you don't ask"

I'd hope in the highly competitive market for cheap broadband they would waive any reconnection charges - remind them you're signing up for 18 months with their packages

Good point quid-itch. Well I'm still looking around at the moment. I quite like the TV offering I get from Virgin Media at the moment, but the broadband internet is way too expensive.
  • I was only in Virgin media for broadband as the rest of the stuff is of no interest to me. I canceled with them on Monday after 2 years £18 per month I knew I could lower. Read lots of good stuff about 02 they have been amazing the whole process with A1 communication has taken 2 days I am live next week.

The downside is Virgin has called me about 10 mins ago and now said stay with us for £10 per month broadband ! ekkkk what do I do now. Well I done some Math, this would only save me £2.50 per month as o2 are £12.50 forever, virgin said this retention deal would last 6 months then it would be back up to good old £18 .00 so I am thinking stick with moving to o2.

Phone Virgin and tell them you want to cancel as Sky offer a much better deal.

Work out the prices of what you want with Sky and Virgin will either price match Sky or offer a lower price. Usually the price match will be for as long as you remain a customer and don't alter the package, the lower price might just be for 12 months.

Let them know that with Sky you get line rental, evening and weekend calls and free caller display for £10.
    6 mix package is £21
Broadband free or £5 or £10 - whichever one you want to have. (Cable will usually offer, 2Mb for the free one, 4/10Mb for the £5 and 20Mb for the £10 in the bundled offer they give).

On cable the XL TV package similar to 6 mixes also gives you Setanta channels included.

If you mention the Sky+, and haggle right you might get it free or £35 instead of the current £75 offer. No monthly charge for the V+ when on the XL TV package.

If you do your home work, you should get a good deal, but you have to mean you are going to cancel, don't bottle it.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I am not argueing here, I am asking for help really.

I have been with virgin for ages, and want my bill to go down. I have phoned about 8 times and talked to different people, they will simply not give me a deal on a tv xl, v+, extra box, 20 meg BB and land line.

They will not go below 80 quid. I have cancelled, they know they cannot get in touch with me to try and get me back on and they still let me go. Problem is, Sky are giving me no joy either.

My Virgin bill went up - they have offered me a £35.50 deal but as I don't use the TV channels I have arranged for a BT connection. I got reconnected at half price.
I need a good BB deal. My son does lots of gaming tho I would rather he didn't. I'm wary of signing a deal that lands me a big bill if we use too many Gb.
BT has an unlimited Option but it is expensive. How can I tell what we use now?
