Password Help

I have been offered a computer at a very cheap price by this man who has divorced from his wife but it is password protected, is there a program where I can remove the password or by-pass it as I don`t want to buy it if it is going to cost me money to remove the password that no-one knows.

You'd probably be better off just reformatting/reinstalling Windows on it.

Okay thanks anyway for your replies, I appreciate them.

I have just been to look at it and for £25 I have been offered a desk, a monitor,(the large version which I have got in work which I will have to replace), a printer , a photocopier and obviously the keyboard and tower and several games but it has not come with the disc for windows xp which the person said it was on, so will it still work when I go to set it up in my girlfriend`s house, as that`s who I am buying it for.
I appreciate all the help I can get.
    Thanks
  • If it worked before you took it home, then it should work after you get it home. You only need the XP disc if you want to format the pc, otherwise no need for it. Maybe you could ask the person if they have the disc just in case you want to format it.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Thanks for moving it saintscouple, this really is the best site online and I have probably converted about 50 people in the last year as they were so fed up of me going on about it they took a look, and after months of nagging from me they are all hooked as well. I would like to say thank you to everyone who replied to my thread. I have spent hours searching the web and the best solution I have got so far is this link here which is a pretty good link for helping you find products and solutions to problems, I was quite impressed with it.

you would need internet access and a cd writer, but hirens boot cd contains tools to retrieve/reset passwords both for the BIOS and the OS, invaluable bit of kit!

    This is what you need:

But as others said, re-installing a fresh copy of XP would still be a better option for using a second hand PC.
    Hope this helps.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • I would wipe the hard drive and reinstall XP. For all you know the hard drive might be full of viruses and spyware

I have just been to look at the Pc and when I turn it on,it just says warning cpu has been changed please re-enter cpu settings in the cmos setup and remember to save before quit. I have no idea what cmos set up is though. The only thing it will let me do is enter a password which I obviously don`t know , as when it loads on start up it scans for about 20 secs then it gives you 2 choices, escape to by-pass the scan and when the scan finishes it gives you a choice of pressing F1 but that is it, it will not let me do anything else, so I am totally stuck now. I haven`t actually bought it yet, but I would like to get it for my girlfriend. Is it beyond repair does anyone think? please remember I don`t know too much about computers so any help can you please explain thoroughly, but any help is most welcome.I am not actually connected to the internet where the computer is at the moment so will that make a difference, sorry for being so thick, but I am not great on computers so i thought I had better ask that question as well. I know I should be posting this on the other board but I get great help on this board as well, so once again thanks to all you brilliant money savers who have been trying to help me with this problem. I really appreciate all of your help.

    Thanks.
