Asked for ID for a cerdit card???

Has anyone ever been asked for ID when applying for a CC??
I have recently applied to barclaycard to transfer my balance. Online decision said yes and that they would be sending out relevent documentation/cards.
Today I got a letter in a plain white envelope with my handwritten address on it. Inside is a letter with the barclay card logo but the actually wording of the letter does not seem quite right. It says, we have unable confirm employ, please forward copy of driving licence passport and utility bill by return. there is a scanned signature/squiggle with BC customer services typed under neath. There is no telephone number on the letter.
Enclosed is an envelope with a hand written PO box address.
I have called C on the numbers listed on the website but to be honest they were not much help and would not even confirm if cards had been issued or if this was a normal letter. I have another number to call between 9am and 5pm tomorrow.
So have any of you been asked to provide such things?? I'm not sure that even if the letter is a genuine request from barclaycard that I am happy with sending passport/driving licence thru the post be it a copy or not.

My husband was asked for some extra documents but letter was printer and signed with Barclay address and contact details.Return envelope with printed PO BOX address was provided.
I wouldn't trust anything hand written without contact details and Barclay letterhead paper.0 -
When I applied to open a credit card account with HSBC & do a balance transfer (March 2007?) they asked for ID/proof of address/proof of earnings etc.0

I believe it's all to do with the "Know your customer" requirements to enable the bank to verify your identity and address.
Usual request would be a printed document with details of various documents that could be provided - passport (photocopy only) EU National Identity card (photocopy only) utility bill not more than three months old etc. etc.
You could call 0870 241 3584 (8-8) for further info, but be money saving and try and find an alternative number on "say no to 0870".0 -
Take the letter into a branch along with the required ID and ask them to verify if it's genuine.
If it is then the branch should be able to verify the details and pass information on for you.
Least that's how I've done it when applying for bank accounts online and ID is required - I know Barclaycard are a different department, but they're all under the same brand."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0 -
I'd suggest taking the letter and documents required into a branch of that bank. They should be able to forwards any photocopies or faxt any documents to the appropriate department.
I would definately not trust a hand written po box address on a letter that didn't contain a contact number at the very least. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

Thanks for all the replies.
I don't have a branch near me. I called the number provided by the cs team on monday. It was for the fraud department. I have to forward the letter and contents to them directly as they say it is not policy to issue anything other than printed pre paid envelopes. The did confirm cards had been printed and issued over a week ago but not yet activated.
I am purely surmising that someone has the envelope/cards and is looking for me to reply with personal details so they can activate them.
Obviously the cards are now cancelled anyway and i'm now letting the anti fraud department take over.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/2000

Scary! Let us know what the fraud department say - if this isn't an official Barclaycard request we should probably see how MSE can warn as many people as possible.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0
