My hubby is asking if he can connect it to his VHS video and record all his home movies onto disk without needing anything else - and also our camcorder to this to record directly onto disk?0

It would appear so from here http://www.maplin.co.uk/Media/PDFs/A66CU.pdf where it describes the scart as being the AV input which suggests that it can be used for recording. What goes around - comes around0 -

This Yamada has a Firewire DV input for digital camcorders, and also has an S-Video and SCART input for analogue camcorders.
You will be able to copy home recorded VHS movies to DVD via the SCART input.
If you want to copy Pre-Recorded store bought movies to DVD then you will need to purchase a Macrovision/Video enhancing SCART cable for about £30.000 -
personally i would just wait a while. Yamada is not exactly a trust make, these recorders have fallen and will continue to do so.0

Yamada happens to be the brand by which Umax sells their goods, so I think they can be well and truely trusted, as they have been round for years...

I was just looking into buying one to do my home movies on. thanksNo reliance should be placed on the above.0

Ok I stand corrected. However was just thinking along the lines of other standard dvd players which are going cheap as chips and may only have a few months life in them.0

The LiteOn does not play DIVX movies.
Personally I have read more bad things about LiteOn than Yamada.
Yamada players are generally well respected as a budget chinese brand, and let's face it, all these cheap recorders are made in China.
The Yamada models are firmware upgradeable, unlike some of the supermarket brands.
The average price of this Yamada DVR-8400X is £120 plus postage elsewhere.0 -
Would like to say that we have a Yamada dvd player that we got from Amazon about 2 years ago if not longer and its never been a problem. Get used lots too and has lots of functions and menus on it which adjusts all different settings which i would have expected to find on more expensive models. Yamada is a name that i would recommend.0
