Vista Wireless "limited connectivity" issue

I have a recently purchased laptop (Vista basic) that I have connected to a wireless broadband connection at home. All was fine for about three months. However on the weekend the free Norton antivirus subscrption ended, so I removed the programme with the intention of putting AVG on it. I also initialised the Windows Firewall and Windows defender.

However since I took the Norton antivirus off I have been unable to connect to the internet via the wireless connection (it shows as having limited connectivity). I know that there is no problem with the wireless router as i tested with my friend's laptop.

Does anyone have any suggestions, i saw a similar thread on this the other day but to be honest the jargon was a bit over my head. Thanks

Have you tried it with the widnows firewall turned off as well? How did you remove Norton, did you use the Norton removal tool?

  • I removed Norton via the uninstall programmes section in control panel.

If it helps my modem/router is one of the Netgear/Sky ones.

I have tried closing the firewall, but no change occurred to the situation

The first thing I would do is download the Norton Removal tool then and run it. Norton is a devil to get rid of and using add/remove programs is unlikely to remove all trces of it.

Also open up a command prompt window and try and ping your router, you can find the IP address of the router by typing ipconfig and making a note of the IP address for the default gateway. See if that works or not.

If you click on the wireless icon (bottom right hand corner) does it say "Local only" as opposed to "Local and Internet"?

If so, the problem is, I believe, the settings on the router. Had the same issue with my Vista laptop when I tried to change some of the security settings. I think there is a function to automatically repair so that connectivity is restored.

    Hi,

Have you tried deleting your saved settings by opening your network and sharing centre, then selecting 'manage wireless networks' from the task bar on the left hand side? Once you have deleted the old settings, try connecting to your network again making sure that your network key is exactly right. If you are with sky, the WPA key is in capitals, its important that you do input it in caps cos otherwise you will have trouble connecting and get those limited connectivity messages.

  • i've tried the above but no success.

in the network and sharing centre the animation says that it is an "unidentified network" with a X to the internet

    access is local only now.

    any other suggestions

have you tried right clicking the wireless icon( computers with blue circle in bottom right corner) and selecting the diagnose and repair option to see what vista comes up with.
  • Tried all the diagnostic options to no avail
