Is the problem the one that mail delivery is a naturual monopoly, it just isn't efficient having more than one person come up your drive?

However, it doesn't have to be someone from RM.

Absolutly, privatise it and make sure that only profitable places get any post.

Bad luck for people off the beaten track or in Scotland.

yup mail isnt really a profitable buisness.the problem in the UK is we are half monopoly/half open market.
in real terms it should be treated more as a government service.
okay its still needed streamlined but the service is deteriating badly with the cuts which i think most customers are seeing.
RM has to offer downstream access to the likes of TNT.so TNT gets a nice profiable buisness customer and collects their mail.
then passes it to RM for the delivery, delivery is the big cost.
before the market was open the buisness customers were subsidising the residential customers. residential is money pit.
when postcomm originally were set up the rival companies were not t be allowed to cherry pick profitable areas and were to be under the same USO as RM.
remember all the big mail companies in other countries are fighting having their own markets opened up.
all the rival companies in the UK are continually pushing postcomm to push rm harder.
they want the rm buisness model split up for example
TNT for example is presently being investigated for its funding by the german government.
they are also fighting the new minimum wage in germany

oh and to add.rm's real money maker is door2doors (D2D)
posties get about 1.67p per item delivered but rm are pushing to remove this payment(its been the same for over a decade)
its a growing market,Sky alone are sending out 200 million d2d's this year!

    intersting topic

what I ahve done in the padt is to complain to the firm you bought the goods from who Im sure as a matter of goodwill will offer you something.
They can then claim something back from Parcel force as they will have alot more pull than a customer

PF are usually pretty good - especially compared to other firms Ive delt with in the past

Amtrak for example are really really bad for losing or delivering things & when things go wrong trying to navigate through the automated 0870 system is almost impossible & expensive

DHL also have one of these systems and we refuse to use firms that use em

nag your suppliers & website firms about this and they do listen to their customers
