Playstation 2 Finally Died - Best Way Forward

Well our trusty PS2 has finally given up the ghost and we are left with about 50 games which we still play occasionally.

Any ideas for the best way forward. Our original plan was to get a PS3, but the refusal of Sony to make these backwards compatible seems to have scuppered that.

My best option seems to just go out and buy a new PS2 and then when I need a new generation console look at the PS3 v Xbox 360 on their own merits.

I think you've answered your own question then. Buy another ps2 until you feel you really need to upgrade to a nextgen console.

For the record though, the earlier 60Gb PS3s are 99% ps2 compatible. Can be bought on ebay albeit at a premium

Looks like the only way forward, I see they can be bought for as little as £80.

I did look at the 60GB PS3, but tbh I think that would work out more expensive than the 40Gb PS3 plus buying a separate PS2.

Also, I'm not sold on the PS3 yet

What has happened to it. My sons died but we found instructions on how to take it apart and fix it. We gave it a good dust out whilst we had it open and it still works now.

I have done that several times in the last few years. I got instructions on how to strip it down and clean the magic eye and also stop it "sticking" by re-lubricating the mechanism on which it travels.

Sadly when I repeated the process today, it's now totally dead.

If you are paying that much, you're being robbed.

Don't pay more than £50, which is what Play.com sell them for

Alternatively, check out your local car boot sale or the classifieds for a cheaper price

Sorry, but play arent selling them for £50. Those are individuals selling second hand units via play. you would have no comeback at all if something was wrong with them. GAME do second hand units with a three month warranty if you must buy used, but otherwise, if its going to be used a fair bit, i'd buy new and pay that bit extra. Well worth it.
  • Certainly gamestation and game sell the pre-owned as do cash converters at far less than £80.

    I certainly wouldn't waste money on a new PS2

    Thanks for all the replies.

I know I could pick up a second hand one relatively cheapish, but would rather get new so at least I know I will get a full 1 year warranty and won't be in the same position looking for another in a few months.

What do you mean "dead" anyway? If it doesn't read disc, you can get and fit a replacement laser lens head.
