Boiler Breakdown Cover- Which One ? ?

I'v decided to take the plunge & take out some cover for my 5yr old Baxi back boiler. I'v checked all the tables & listings on the U switch site. Trouble is there is so much choice & price variety. Anybody got comments, good or bad on taking out & using a boiler cover plan.
many thanks in advance to all replies.
All the best, Peter

Scores and scores of posts on this subject, with many different views.

BG's is the most widely used scheme - some love it - some hate it. It is very expensive.

Most other schemes are simply a cover organisation that gets a local plumber to do the work; and that depends on the skill and integrity of the plumber. Also some schemes are little short of criminal in that they take your money but you will get zero service.

Best bet is to find a good reliable local plumber(if you can) as it should work out cheaper.

However do a search on MSE for different views.
  • Thanks Cardew for your information. I looked back at the old pages & found lots of comment. Went to my local branch of Swintons insurance & got Household breakdown cover, water gas & electric including heating plant, for £50 for the year, reduced from £69. A good deal, I hope. Cheers, Peter

Hopefully you won't have to make a claim.

However if you do please let us know what transpires.

Incidentally what is the age of CH system restriction? Do you not have to have the system seviced annually?

Hi as already stated there are many options available however there are two on demand options that are also available from BG. These are less well advertised but they offer a fixed price breakdown normally around £180 depending on where you live that includes all labour and parts. They also will fix the fault and allow you to join the contract paying the amount spread over the year. If you save the money and use one of these options if required you should be better off. I am surprised that anyone pays every month with these options on offer. HTH
  • Hi Cardew, the limits are, £750 maxium per job, no limit on jobs per year. The boiler must be serviced yearly [your cost] & no older than 12 yrs. The policy also covers toilets & drains, blockages & loo breakdowns. Theres also a freephone technical helpline. Cheers, Peter
