50p price increase overnight in tesco!!

i work nights at tesco stocking out tea and coffee and a few more aisles.. about 6:30am ( 1/2 hour before store opens) i realised id left my pen on the tea and coffee aisle... so i went back to collect it to see one the "price integrity" women changing prices on my aisle.... just out of curiosity i took a peek over her shoulder and i saw her changing a label for a jar of columbian coffee.... from £2.68 to £3.18!

I mean i know columbian coffee is not cheap anyway BUT 50p overnight? Thats just plain silly and how can they justify that?!

It does sound a lot but remember traditionally coffee farmers have been grossly underpaid and it's only in recent years that they've started getting anywhere near a reasonable amount of money for their product.

Tesco also put the price of the food we buy for our cats up overnight from £1.99 to £2.72 a pack!! I did email and ask why, but never received a reply.

I phoned their HQ today and they say that there is a 4-5 day backlog of emails.

Seems like they're going downhill fast - anyone else think the same?

Yup - In their attempt to become all things to all people, all the time and everywhere, they have forgotten to make sure that thier customer services can cope - and clearly it cant, due to the length of time it takes to recieve a reply from them, and even then, they dont answer the bloody question!

Pricing appears to have become less competitive too, I used to go and grab loads of bargains, but they seem to have stopped more recently, and I now go to Sainsburys and Lidl instead, as I get better service, and better value for money Ironically.

This is what the big supermarkets want to achieve. They need to price the small shops out of the market (opening Tesco extra, Sainsbury's in petrol stations etc if necessary), and then once you have no choice they can increase their margins.

I've noticed quite a few things have gone up recently- including ham from the deli counter , those packets of grated mozzarella and mince.

Tesco's put the price of a lot of stuff down about 6 weeks ago but now they have all gone back up. Value apples from 33p to 69p, value banana's from 59p to 116p, value onions from 34p to 88p, etc. Also pink salmon from its usual 60p to 84p.

I bet they will put them back down in a couple of months and announce price cuts.

Apparently there is a bit of a fruit and veg war against lidl and aldi, they have being doing thiers at half price and have been trying to compete, but the prices always go back up again!

Prices can go up and down for many reasons. Sometimes a new product comes out and will be priced ultra low just to try to get market share ... a big chain may have struck a bulk purchase deal with a supplier ... a supplier has become over sticked and is having a clear out to make way for a new product (or packaging) ... something may have been on special offer and is now returning to its normal price ... etc. etc. etc.

Maybe they have decided that they need to increase prices to cover all those 'get the goods free if we overcharge you at the till' items ... or maybe they just need to cover the cost of people asking customer services why the price has gone up.

Its a fact of life ... at the minute many everyday grocery items are being under priced due to competition .. farmers are in great trouble ... the fruit and veg in our local Tescos actually seems very B-rated. To cover these losses other items may be artifically inflated ... sell someone a loaf of bread cheap and hope they pay over the odds for a pint of milk!
