recently i renewed my insurance policy with admiral.
i had 3 points on my liscence, with another 3 to go on it,i had a call from one of admirals sales advisors, they told me they could get my premium down even further by not putting the 3 points on the policy as they werent on my liscence at this point in time and they didnt need to know about them until next year, i have now put the points on to my liscence,so i now total 6 points.
i recieved a letter from admiral this morning telling me they have done a system check and found a quote from elephant where i stated i had 6 points not 3.
they have asked me to forward my liscence to them.
i called them today, got through to an indian call centre, they told me they will now update my policy,i told him what the sales advisor had stated,he is going to check the recorded call and get back to me on monday evening.

any ideas on what i can expect, surely if i bought the policy under the pretence that i didnt need to disclose these other points until next year (by this time the first 3 points should be off my liscence) i should not be asked to pay more or update my policy.

in the past when i recieved my first 3 points i called my insurer and told them about them straight away and they had to update my policy which went up by £25,but surely these circumstances are different?

anyone been here before?

Sounds like a classic case of the salesperson knowlingly not processing the quote in the correct way in order to increase his or her chances of a sale. Normally a pending conviction would be added to a quote.

If the sales adviser did as you say, it would really not be right for them to try to charge an additional premium for the conviction until your renewal next year.

Surely adding a surcharge for a pending conviction (which might or might not happen) is about as fair as me asking for a reduction on the basis of pending extra NCD (which also might or might not happen)

i see what you mean, but i definatly stated my points were defrinatly going to happen, there was no ifs about it,and i explained this that i had been caught speeding and was just waiting until i could get to the local court to pay thre fine and accept the points.

Not really. It is for the insurer to determine how it wishes to rate a premium - like any sensible individual would, they will proceed on the 'worst-case scenario' basis. If you don't like how they do it, you can go elsewhere.

There's nothing 'unfair' about this anyway - if your NCD has been temporarily reduced due to a pending claim, if the NCD is subsequently reinstated you wil get a refund. Likewise if a pending conviction is added, but then you do not actually receive the conviction you can contact your insurer and get a premium refund.

    Still doesn’t seem fair.

I does seem fair that if you pick up some points you pay extra for the lifetime of the points which is three years.

If you pay extra for because of a pending set of points you end up paying extra for four years.

I see your point about premium refunds but in my experience these are difficult to come by and in any event they often come with a £25 administration charge attached

Well, for starters you actually have to declare motoring convictions to insurers for five years after the event, not three, under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

The conviction will only be applied for the purposes of premium rating for 5 renewals, regardless of whether they were pending at the first renewal.

i understand that you need to tell them for the past 5 years.but points on your liscence arent convictions, only a court can convict you,not a police officer, this is why a lot of insurance companies ask for convictions and points.
it was actually the police officer who caught me speeding told me if they dont ask for points then dont tell them,if they only ask for convictions then points do not count.

Er, points on your license are convictions, they are motoring convictions - you do not have to be summonsed to be convicted of a motoring offence. Whoever told you that is talking rot.

Regardless, you have to disclose any motoring conviction for which you were fined. Points or not is irrelevant.
