What does a geek look like, when i look in the mirror in the morning do i see a geek stairing back? Maybe, if i am classified as geek then I am proud to be one!
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

    I think your reply qualifies.....

Seriously, clearly the OP has such little knowledge, that they are concerned about "burning out their CPU" by the simple action of adding more RAM.

This is likely the reason why they are even considering replacing their CPU.

Instead of being disabused of this notion, the 'computer enthusiasts' here have gone into 'upgrade overdrive' with their advice. ;)

The OP has not yet said what he (she) wants from the PC.

If just surfing/email/few/photos and XP, then another 512mb or even changing to 2x512mb, would be fine.

No offence to the OP, but if you are nervous about changing ram, then suggestions for replacing motherboards and processors are irrelevant.

    I have a 8yo socket A, I've just fitted an AMD xp2400 (£13.50inc p&p, ebay) and with 768mb ram, it's all I require.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yeah, but everyone has a geeky mate who'll fit it for them for a few beers. ;)
