Upgrade my PC - Would you advise??

Not only DDR2, but laptop RAM too boot. What an ignoramus. :rolleyes:0

Not only that but it is a kit, so it is TWO sticks of 512's so even if it was correct, it would be difficult to squeeze into the one available slot.

I have no idea why people are suggesting to run Crucial's ActiveX scan on your computer, nor why they are suggesting you post the make of your Motherboard, when you have clearly indicated what RAM you already have onboard.

Because motherboards have a max amount of ram that they can have - if this is 1gb the op will be back here rather confused if they stick a new 1gb stick in there.0 -
Guys
Thanks for pointing out the several mistakes in the one link I provided. Accept my 'ignoramity'.
However, the point is why would you keep the 256MB stick when you could get 2X512MB stick or even a single 1 GB stick (laptop or otherwise)?. The idea is to upgrade the PC and if it needs the pathetic, installed 256MB RAM to be chucked, so be it.
Also, I did mention that the OP should buy RAM compatible with his MB - I'm assuming he/she is intelligent enough not to buy the RAM pointed to at the first link provided - fair enough?
Finally, would appreciate your enlightened views on the Linux idea as well.

To reiterate, the OP made clear the type and size of memory required.
512MB of PC3200 RAM.0 -

C'mon sangupt, give it a rest.
The OP is clearly a novice, so why would he/she want to go messing around with any incompatibilities to do with Linux?
Secondly, with that in mind, why would you provide such a misleading link?
Thirdly, if you expect the OP to be "intelligent enough" not to purchase the RAM in your link, surely you should have been intelligent enough not to post such a pointless and misleading link?
Lastly, 768 MB of RAM is perfectly adequate on a Celeron system running XP. If the OP was a hardcore game player, he/she wouldn't have a Celeron processor.
I'm running a old laptop with just that amount. Laptop came with 256Mb RAM, now there are no more crashes and slow opening of multiple programs.
All for £15.
So, turn it in.

Looking at you current spec I would advise buying a new motherboard, cpu and RAM, go for a dual core Pentium as a minimum spec, AMD, Celeron are very poor performers and do not have any comparison to Pentium class dual core processors, there not that expensive either so if you shop around you could find a motherboard cpu and ram bundle for less than £180, you will appreciate the difference in performance and your investment will pay off in a very short period of time, there are lots of options out there and I am sure there will be others out there who will provide you with advice, however one important thing to remember when you handle any computer or other static sensitive components please use an anti-static earth strap, these can be picked up for around £3.00 and will save you hundreds of pounds from ESD (electro static discharge) damage, there will be people out there who will tell you not to bother taking this precaution but please do not listen to them as they do not know what they are talking about, trust me I work as an I.T Support engineer and have over 10 years in the I.T industry and a vested interest in electronics, I have seen very expensive computer components damaged through careless handling, I hope this information is of help but don’t hesitate to ask me for any further assistance if required.

I priced 1GB of DDR2-800, an e2160 and an asrock core4dual-vsta motherboard to be just under £100 from Scan, including delivery. The e2160 will overclock in that board to ~2.5ghz if that's your thing. I've suggested the asrock in case the OP wants to use their existing AGP video card. If this is the case, it has PCI-E as well, so there's an upgrade path still.
That'd pee all over the current system. Add £135 to that and get an 8800GT and that's a decent gaming system. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Yes, asrock are a very good motherboard as I use them my self so I can vouch for there reliability, they are great value for money and are very stable, I have used Asrock for the last 5 years now and have no complaints, seems like a good deal.
