I have a quick question - apologies if this question or similar has already been covered...

I have just signed up to checkmyfile.com and have noticed that two current accounts I held with my ex husband have defaults for teeny amounts (one of £48 and one of £114) - these will be for unarranged overdrafts that me and my ex clocked up and didn't bother sorting after the split. It's come back to bite us on the bum though as it's had a really negative affect on my file. Anyway, even though it shows the status of the accounts as closed and I haven't been chased for the debt for over two years, I was wondering if I paid it off, would this somehow be recorded as such on my credit files and go some way to mending my really bad credit rating, or will I just have to accept that lenders won't touch me with a barge pole until the defaults fall off, in about 4 years or so? All advice appreciated. :)

A long way to go but enjoying the challenge! ;)

  • Hi folks i am after sorting advice as i am getting no where at the minute
back in 2006 i took a loan out with Nationwide Building society and due to unforeseen circumstances i defaulted on the loan.
realising i had made a mess of my finances i went into a debt management plan with CCCS and made regular payments for 43 months and i am now debt free, however looking at my account on Eqifax Nationwide marked every payment that i made as i missed payment instead of an agreed payment, they are refusing to adjust the rating to show that i did in fact make payments to the account, i don't know where to turn next as i need this sorting out
    any advice would be appreciated

If you defaulted i believe the account stays in default even when you pay it off as you broke the agreement. It stays on for 6 years and will then drop off. Until that drops off you will get rejected by most lenders.
  • Forgive me if anyone has already asked something along these lines. I have been recieving letters from Santander stating that i am in arrears of £208 on my loan account, however whenever i have called them as i now have a direct debit set up and was unsure when i'd missed a payment i have been told to "ignore the letters asthey must be sent in error and that my account is showing clear and up to date" other letters arrived and i ignored some as i had been told to everytime i call, and other times i call again to be told the same thing. Last week after recieving another letteri called again to be told the same as every other time however this time the staff member said he would spend some time looking into it for me. I am now being told i owe from 2008 and this will go on my credit history. I am disguted that having given thencorrect information of course i would've paid, but this has been going on so long as i wad always told it wad clear. I want it removed from my credit history as i dont feel this is normal or fair circumstances. Is this possible and how do i do this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Have you checked your credit files to see what has been recorded on there? That should be the first step to see what has been recorded. If its a missed payment in 2008 only then you need to work out what happened in 08 to cause the arrears.

If you find they have marked a missed payment marker every month from 2008 until now then at the least you could expect them to remove any payment markers between when you first phoned and was told there was no arrears and the date of this last phone call. Have you now paid off the arrears?

    Hi,

I've been following advices for MSE to improve my credit history and It worked out well for me.

    Bit of Back ground.
I had not credit associations earlier and defaulted cap1 for £250 in 2007. I've paid up my default amount in Aug this years and since the on a mission to Improve my credit score. I just have basic cash card account with Bank of scotland.

I got for Vanquis cc as I was declined by barclays initial card and used the card to full extent and paid up all the balance. Then got approved for Vodafone sim-only contract for 12months.

I would like to advice on Next step to improve my credit history.

I want to get a current account.
Should I apply for Bank of scotland current account as I already had cash card account with them and maintained decent balance since a year or should I try with some other bank.
Which back would offer me current account with one default on in credit file.
