Hi everyone - a brand newbie here!

Quick background - lightbulb moment in Nov 05 - now on the right, probably 4 years, road to being debt free.

In sorting out my finances I checked my credit report - I've got a good score, but there were 8 errors on it. Having requested assistance from Experian, a major one (a co. had mixed up my married surname, maiden name and middle name 3 times) has been sorted, but I'm having problems with credit card companies that have confirmed they've closed my account, but they're still showing as active - months after the closure confirmation, plus there are duplicates that companies say aren't there! The Electoral Roll info is wrong - has me living at my old address a year longer than actual, but trying to find someone who can change it is proving difficult to say the least!

I'd really appreciate any advice as to how I can get these sorted. In the meantime, should I join credit report monitoring until the errors are fixed? I'm obssessive about accuracy!

    Thanks,
    Ali

I tried to sign up to the free trial from Equifax and got as far as entering my credit card details. I then got taken to a screen entitled "No Products Available". I have tried to contact Equifax through their contact us system but with no success. Any advice?
  • Hi Newbie here

A quick question re credit ratings. I plan to apply for a mortgage at the end of the year. I heard that I needed a credit card to build up credit worthiness, so I applied for one thru my bank in January, which I got. I then found another bank with a cheaper rate, so I applied for that and was turned down. Do I really need one? I don't use credit cards. Don't my mobile contract and BT landline count towards credit score? Recently, I have become a British Citizen, should I inform the main credit checking companies of this? Due to some good advice, I have also registered onto the Electoral roll. I don't have store cards (never have), never go over my overdraft and have never taken out a loan.

What else can I do to improve my credit rating?

I've been told that using the details I have provided that they cannot verify my identity.

    they've asked me to provide;

Two forms of original documentation linking you to your
current address (e.g. utility bill, bank statement, tenancy
agreement, solicitor's letter) dated within the past three
    months

    Plus,

    · A copy of either your passport, driving licence or birth
    certificate.

My jobs meant that over the past 4 years I've shifted addresses but I've always been on the electoral register.

I've also had no problem getting credit. In the past 6 months I've switched bank accounts and been given a personal loan with no problems.

Just wondering if its worth my while sending away copies of my passport etc.

    Neil
I had to do that and they send all documents back to you. There were also some errors on my reports which I have been able to get corrected. I think it is worth it. Even if it is just out or curiosity.
    Happy to be happy
  • I am having a dispute with a tradesman who is threating me with court action. It is a minor amount around £250.

Before I go too far with this, if I lose the case, do I get any effect on my credit rating, even if I pay up immediatley if the case is decided aganst me?

    Many thanks

I recently did a few car insurance searches through confused.com and these mutiple searches appeared on my credit rating! surely this will be quite alarming to anyone doing a credit check on me?

I've had this exact same thing happen. Apparently, some companies (specifically Royal Sun Alliance) do automatic 'Unrecorded or Unspecified Enquiries' when you use Confused.com. I spoke to RSA direct about it and they're quite open about the fact that even if you don't specifically look at their quote or take it any further, the fact that they come up on the list sets off the auto check.

They show up on your report to you, but not to anyone doing a credit search and will be there for 12 months.

I think it's wrong and unnecessary, but nothing I can do about it.

  • At the moment i am paying out £180 a month on a £6,000 Natwest Loan APR 8.9%, £110 on a 2,500 Liverpool Victoria Loan APR 12.9% and have a CC balance of 1600 (19.9 APR) (never missed a payment in 2.5 years)

I would dearly love to get a £10,000, 10 year Northern Rock debt consolidation loan (APR 5.5) and get my outgoings down to £100 a month while my career picks up (Which it is doing, thank god)

However i have an experian rating of Poor, due to 2 defaults - 1 loan, 1 CC which were both defaulted in 2001 and paid off in Jan 2004. Meaning Northern Rock is no no as would Moneyback Bank, Tesco et al

    So:

Will my Experian rating jump straight to Excellent in Jan 2007 when my defaults disapear, due to my flawless credit in the previous 6 years?

    Thanks for any help offered
