i am thinking of contacting schools via my work in recycling.... which could me visiting schools on a regular basis, if the scheme works out..
before i write letters etc.. i want to find out how i go about getting a police check on myself/certificate.. or what ever it looks like so i can put the schools at ease about my backgroundetc..
i know it is compulsery for teachers and people actually working with children, but i thought it would be good practice for me to get one, as i would possibly be going to the school on a weekly/regular basis, even if i am only dealing with the office staff or teachers..
even though i supose it might not be necessary... i feel for peace of mind all round it would be a good idea.... as i know if anyone was going to my kids school on a regular basis male or female i would expect them to be checked out....

The current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves. The application would need to be made by the school at which you were working as the result would be sent to them (as well as you).£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

ok thanks for that.... so it would be up to the school or the local authority to get a check on me, not me producing a police check on myself..
which does make good sense....Work to live= not live to work0 -
If the local authority wanted to commission you to go into schools on a regular basis, they might carry out a CRB check on you. Having said that ...
I don't think that a school can insist that all contractors visiting the premises have a CRB check, especially if you are not having contact with the children.COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »even if i am only dealing with the office staff or teachers..
However you do sometimes get a Catch 22 situation where schools don't want anyone in the building on an official basis without a CRB check, yet individuals can't get them. Which is ludicrous, because a visitor like you should not be left with a group of children without someone from the school present.
I would expect anyone able to have unsupervised contact with my children at school to have had a CRB check, but not the refuse collectors or the photocopier engineers.COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »i know if anyone was going to my kids school on a regular basis male or female i would expect them to be checked out....
Write the letters and see what they say.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
thanks sue...
i would be collecting items that the kids had brought in to the school to raise funds ( as i would be paying for these unwanted items )Work to live= not live to work0 -
Even if you went in to do an Assembly to explain what you wanted, why, and what you'd do with their 'junk', I can't see why you'd need to have a CRB check. If you were only picking it up, it really should not be necessary (and would be difficult to get!)Signature removed for peace of mind0

I spoke to a Head Teacher about this and he said that he can refuse entry into the school to anyone who has not had a CRB check. He is within his rights to ask for it.
In reality though, this does not happen.
One suggestion is to set up a ltd company and have the company check you, you can then inform the school that you have had a CRB check by your company and is available on request.0 -
you can get a police check on yourself
i done it not so long ago for my visa to go to angola, its not the same as a CRB and you can get it from your local police station. it does contain a full history of your convictions if any on it and it costs £10 but takes up to 40 days to come through once applied
here is the form but this is the merseyside police one so depending on where you live you will have to contact your local constabulary
the form you need is a DP1 form this is as good as a CRB and a lot of the oil companies i work for use these instead of CRB forms

hope this helps tonyHi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
A local police check will not show spent convictions and would not therefore be accepted by a school. I think schools have a statutory duty to carry out a CRB check.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

fengirl using that form i put a link to you can request either a local police check or a national one, this does show spent convictions. if you request national it gets sent to scotland yard for a national check hence the 40 days wait
on mine i have a spent conviction from when i was 18 which is listed
schools do have a legal requirment to do a CRB check if you are being employed by the school but i dont know where that stands if you are self employed doing work within the schoolHi there! thanks for the replies...
i prob.. dont need one... but it was just me trying to show i had thought things through before contacting the various schools..
even though it is not the same i think i will apply for the national police check...even though it might not be the right one.... it will show them i havent been in trouble etc....( except a speeding fine  )
and them after the pilot/trial scheme if it does work out, them maybe they will want to do a proper check..
as i say its just me acting on the side of caution, and being a parent being over protective etc of the situation ( ok maybe not the right words, but you know what i mean)Work to live= not live to work0
