quick question about getting a police check

If a school wants a CRB check which is (briefly) worth the paper it's printed on, they need to request it themselves, probably via the LEA. If the head is just asking to see the individual's copy of a CRB check carried out for another organisation, he could save his breath: additional information MAY have been sent to the organisation requesting the check which will never show on the individual's copy.I spoke to a Head Teacher about this and he said that he can refuse entry into the school to anyone who has not had a CRB check. He is within his rights to ask for it.
In reality though, this does not happen.
If the person has been checked within the LEA, then the LEA can confirm how recently it's been done. However I think 'best practice' says that every time someone changes jobs within the LEA they carry out another one.
The end result is that anyone who has several roles involving contact with children or vulnerable adults will have multiple checks carried out on them: we have several volunteers who have one for their voluntary work with us, another for their paid job, and at least one more for other voluntary work through church, Guides etc.
This might work, except that you'll have to find an Umbrella Body to carry out the check, and satisfy them that your work involves unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable adults, and even then Best Practice says this wouldn't be acceptable if it was actually a requirement to have one for the work you're doing elsewhere. Search the CRB website for portability ...One suggestion is to set up a ltd company and have the company check you, you can then inform the school that you have had a CRB check by your company and is available on request.
Can you tell I get a bit frustrated with this "You've got to have a CRB check" mentality? A CRB check is no substitute for ensuring the protection of children and vulnerable adults by sensible working practices!
Edited to say I took a break in the middle of writing this and now see CTC has added to the thread. It's right to show you've thought things through, but unless you're proposing 'lessons' on recycling I don't see that you'd need one, and even if you WERE proposing lessons I still wouldn't expect you to be left unsupervised with a class of children. You'd have to be mad ... :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
hi... sue....
to be honest i think the only contact i might have is if they want to turn the recycling aspect into a class/school project.. if they are signed up to an eco school scheme...
and then it would be totally supervised... ( .... just imagine me with a classroom fully of kids say why, but, why, but, why, but, )
i think it might be worth me then after the initial letter of introduction etc... and contact is made from the schools THEN see if they ask or want a check...as you say sue i wil not be left unsupervised anyway,
interesting to hear other peoples views and points on the matter..Work to live= not live to work0 -
As alreadu stated, the closest thing to a CRB check you can get as a sole trader, is a list of youe convictions (or lack of them) from the police. This must be done at both local and national level.
In effect whet you are asking for is a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act.
Hope this helps!0 -
Why not ring the local council and ask? the switch board will put you through to the right section, and they have always been very helpful when we have phoned about adult helpers etc for our Chapel clubs.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0
