Barclaycard Credit Limit Discussion Area

Applied for my card back in June. Took a couple of weeks before I received the transfer form however, when it arrived called Barclays at 9am. (Wanted to know what the credit limit was before deciding to transfer £1k from Cap 1). Got through immediately and spoke to a very helpful Customer Advisor who gave me the approved limit over the telephone - £3.5K.
My first experience of Barclay's and can't really complain.
Different story for Cap 1 though - any tips for getting round their awful Customer Service department and getting them to lower interest rates (which are now tied to the BBR and mine's has just been increased again?) ???This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I agree, barclaycard suck big time! i've used martin's tips to borrow £30K + which i've invested in premium bonds. I wanted the barclaycard money to put into my online savings account where it will then be used to repay the monthly statements, though most are only £5 per month.
Whereas Egg gave me a limit of £12k and MBNA etc all said £6k barclaycard said £3500 !! (and you can only balance transfer 90% !!)
When i challenged this they said that if i maintain my debt they will, after time allow me to extend it gradually to a higher amount. This is what they describe as 'responsible' - allowing me to max out, stay there for 6 months then borrow more!
Still whats a guy to do. I took the £3150 and i'm now just waiting for a stream of winnings courtesy of National Savings......This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi, I'm new here !
Sorry to hear so many of you have had such low credit limits from the new Barclaycard.
I signed up online and apart from a longer than average delay in getting all the forms through the post, I have received my card and pin and have transfered my previous credit card (approx £1K) successfully into the Barclaycard, with the good news being that they gave me a £3,500 limit ! I can only guess that when you apply they give those who declare higher amounts on their existing credit cards a lower credit limit than those who have little to transfer but could possibily spend more to fill up the Barclaycard over time ! Who knows, crafty nonetheless !

Hi folks,
Sorry to hear about your low credit limits.I applied online the letter was through just over a week later saying my card was ready.I had BT Just over £5600 from two other cards that the 0% was about to expire and recieved a credit limit of £7300.I guess I am one of the luckier ones. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I think I've been one of the luckier ones too.
OK it did take ages to get the forms sent through and then wait for the card to come etc....... I will admit that the customer service line is possibly one of the most frustrating I've ever come across..........
However, once it arrived I was pleasantly surprised. I asked for a mere £1700 to pay off credit card and overdraft, and lo they have seen fit to give me a £3500 limit. Surprising seeing as how I'm not exactly the most credit active person going and have an "average credit score".
At this point I'm hoping it continues in this fashion and that I never need to contact customer services again (unlikely but I'm an optomist).

Hi there,
Keeping my options open about the new Barclaycard - already have 1020 on a credit card and planning to spend more!
Re. the MBNA card, what's all this about charging a handling fee for doing a balance transfer?

If Barclaycard don't give you the full balance amount you requested, stand your ground with them. We did, we quoted from the ombudsmans web site and got the full amount we asked for.

I've been reading this thread with interest!
I'm not sure when Barcalycard started this 0% offer, but my hubby, who is a high earner, applied for a Barclaycard in January.
He received the card with a 300 pound limit!! He complained, but they told him to wait 3 months before they could do anything. They have now given him 450 pound limit - generous!!!
He does have an account with Barclays, but that seems to make no difference. I've told him to cancel the card, and get another.
