Phones 4 U - prepay insurance

Are my fears of a scam groundless?
Today my OH went to Phones 4 U and purchased a Lobster 320, priced at £14.95 if you buy £10 Virgin top-up.
The till receipt shows £14.95 less £9.99 Directors Discount, £10 top-up and then "Prepay Insurance" and a S/N against £9.99 addition.
The total sum is as it was expected to be but what is this insurance? The sales person made no mention of insurance, no details have been provided regarding an insurance policy as far as I can see.
I am worried that they have taken the details of the credit card used to purchase the phone and will be charging the insurance every year (or quarter or whatever). Anyone have experience of this?
