NTL broadband coup
Simon Fluendy, Mail on Sunday
7 August 2005
CABLE giant NTL will announce tomorrow that its 1.9 million broadband customers are to get a service of ten megabits a second, the UK's fastest consumer internet service.
Announced with annual results, the service will be rolled out to all NTL customers, starting with those signed up to its current fastest rate, three megabits a second - a measure of the amount of information delivered through cables.
There will be no price rise, but customers will pay different rates depending on how much is downloaded, says Bill Goodland, NTL's internet director.
At the new speed, it will take eight seconds for a full CD of music from a service such as iTunes and only minutes for a whole feature film to download.

It seems that the entry level speed will be 3Meg per second. Nice for everyone that is currently making "that call".
cheers

NTL is to crank up the speed for all its broadband punters by setting access speeds at 10 meg as standard. The upgrade to its network is due to be completed by the end of 2006.

When are telewest going to increase THEIR speeds or lower their prices? They don't seem to be competitive anymore. I can't fault their customer service, but they are falling behind everyone else in the market when it comes to speed and price.0

I am with Telewest, I heard through the grapevine that they are supposed to be merging with NTL.

That rumour has been on the go for a while now, but I don't think there is anything definite. What bugs me is that they are charging more for a 1 mb connection than others are charging for 2 mb. I'm seriously thinking about jumping ship if they don't do something soon.0

Telewest are due to announce their results on Thursday. Watch this space!!!0

I rang up Telewest today and spoke to the disconnections dept. I said that their price was very uncompetitive compare with Companies like Tiscali and V21.
I currently have 1mb for £25. They offered to reduce to £17.99 for 1mb on a capped basis that they do not currently enforce. The cap is 8 hours per week internet surfing and she said they would write to me if they were going to enforce the cap. It sounded like a good way for them to save face in reducing my charge, and means that at some point I may have to 'shop around again'. However, in the meantime I'm saving £7 per month and I haven't had to move. I was happy with their service - just not happy with the price.

Paulina.
They currently don't have system to monitor the download cap. Described this as a "trial" but agree its probably a way to save face. I got this for £14.99 / month 1 MBps 1MB Cap - not enforced. Like all moneysaving you will need to review this in future...Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
