Should I sign on??? Not sure what is required

In December last year I was asked to leave my place of employment as they knew I was looking elsewhere and they didn't want to train me up.

So I handed in my resignation and did 2 weeks work experience for some graduate programmes I would like to apply for. However since December I am yet to find work despite applying to loads of agencies and companies direct.

I was wondering am I entitled to any sort of benfit and can it be backdated??

If so, how do I go about this??

Firsty, go to the Jobcentreplus website and read the conditions about benefits.

    www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk

    http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Customers/WorkingAgeBenefits/Dev_015272.xml.html

If you think that you can satisfy the conditions for the benefit, a claim can be made on line or over the phone.

With regard to backdating, you will have to show good cause for not making your claim earlier.

Your reasons for leaving your last job could affect the amount of benefit you get paid.

Glad you read the website and made your claim.

The date of your claim will be today, 19th March however as this was the date that you made your claim.

    Did you discuss backdating ?
  • they may be a bit funny regarding you giving your previous job up as technically you made yourself unemployed. i think they can make you wait 13 weeks before agreeing to pay you anything.

There can be a sanction of between 2 to 26 weeks, but you can appeal against this. If you can show you had good cause for leaving your employer there may not be a sanction.

well I took 4 days off to do some work experience and when the general manager found out he took me in his office and asked what day was I working next. So I told him the fRiday and he said don't bother turning up because he doesn't want me there. he made me feel very small in his office and basically said I couldn't come back if I did the work experience. So I resigned rather than know he would reduce my hours as it was part time temporary contract suited to business needs (hotel industry) and I would sooner or later be forced out.

Where do I stand on that??

If you took the time off as acrued holiday it would seem to me like your boss doesn't have a leg to stand on. If however you just declared you were taking time off then he had every right to fire you but should have done so following correct procedures. Constructive Dissmissal as I understand it is where you are given little other option but to leave, i'e through bullying, harrassment or unreasonable requests being levied on you. However to claim this as a reason to justify being eligable for benefits you may have had to put a claim in against your employer. I know there are time limits on claims but I am not too sure what they are . You can google the government website for employment regulations. Don't know if this helps

yeah I used holidays which my line manager was fine with. It was teh general manager who wasn't happy. I was thinking of claiming unfair dismissal but seen as it wasn't my career job I didn't want the hassle.

What should I tell the job centre? They let me go because there wasn't enough work.....?

The Jobcentre will ask your employer why you left.

They will also ask you why you left.

A decision will be based upon both replies regarding any sanction.
