  • I actually had a similar problem myself.

When I first moved into my house, the door to both gas and electricity boxes came off in the wind - it turned out both were damaged, but the electricity box was so bad that the previous owners, presumably in an attempt to deceive me, had 'repaired' the door with blutak and painted white over it so it looked okay. I repaired it with pins of my own devising, and tried to repair the door hinge using epoxy resin and bits of metal, but eventually it failed completely again, suspiciously coinciding with a Scottish Gas 'actual reading' date. Finally, I just bought heavy duty cupboard hinges and fitted them (drilling out huge mount holes from the electricity box itself, fitting the hinges with bolts straight through to the outside, chopping any remnants of the hinges off the damaged door and just mounting the other side of the hinges straight through). It's never, ever coming off again, and has a great action, it's very satisfying. I often wonder what the meter reader thinks when he sees my incredibly sturdy box door.

And before all this I looked all over for replacement doors, B&Q, various electrical factors, etc...nobody knew where to get them. If only I'd known about that website sooner, although it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying ;)

Oh, and regarding the suspiciousness of the door breaking the day Scottish Gas got their reading, I actually complained...got a letter saying "We got your complaint.". After a few months of nothing, I sent a complaint about the lack of resolution for the first complaint, and just got another letter saying "We got your complaint.", so that was pretty terrible.

    "Now, there's a challenge!" perhaps
