How do I cancel an AOL contract

I have been an AOL customer since 1997. In 2005 I added an aol address for my father. Since then I have been using ntl but kept aol going for my father who will be 80 next month, a real silver surfer. Although (I thought) the contract is in my name he has been paying the monthly charge. He has now decided that he no longer wants to surf so I rang aol to cancel the contract. Obviously I was put through to the Indian office and I could barely undertand what the gentleman was telling me. He said that it was not my name on the account so he couldn't talk to me, wouldn't tell me whose name the account was because of data protection. I then tried emailing aol to cancel the account and received an email in response telling me that last year I agreed to update the contract from £24.99 to 8mb also @ £24.99 and this started a new 18 month contract therefore I cannot cancel it. I emailed back asking for proof of this as I know I haven't done it and my father wouldn't have done it without asking me. I have now emailed then 4 times asking the same questions and I get the same email back every time from them, identical. Are there any human beings working for AOL??
If I just cancel the direct debit will I get a bad credit reference? What can I do? Has anyone had this happen to them? Thank you for any advice on this as I am about to explode with frustration at their incompetency.

Dont know if you could but now that AOL have been taken over by the Carphone Warehouse, maybe you could go into one of the shops and speak to someone in Store. They might try and fob you off and tell you to ring up but its worth a try. Sometimes they say they cant help you there and then when really they can (speaking from experience).

No point going in to a CPW store to query your AOL Broadband account. Totally separate companies, though their parent company may be one and the same.

If I were you I'd write a letter of complaint to:

    Complaints Management Team
    c/o Member Services
    PO BOX 2401
    BRISTOL
    BS1 9WX

    Include:
    • Date(s) of incident(s)
    • Name of Member Services representative you originally spoke to, if known
    • The nature of your complaint
    • Your full name and address
    • Your AOL screen name
    • Telephone number
    Good luck.

    hi Janice,
have just seen your problems with aol, How did it turn out,?please,
Im having same sort of thing with another ISP company, not had a contract and have sent the set back asking for them not to take money from my account and to refund my money,as it's also my phone line on the same account,(their way of doing it) after realising they have over £100 plus, have now stopped the direct debit, so any advice would be helpful, thanks regards clearvisor

You could try contacting Ofcom http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consumeradvice/internet/
See if they can help you if you have not agreed to any new contracts.
    Kind Regards
