heOn 14th March 2007, a quid would buy PLN 5.7. 14th March 2008 it was PLN 4.6 (according to XE.com). 19% drop in the Quid/PLN rate in a year. That's a big hit if you're saving to start a business/family back in Poland.
The Zloty has been roughly that level for years.
I worked in Poland for a year, in 1996. I earned 7.5 million zl to start with, per month, and 750 by the end of the year once they'd knocked some noughts off. That added up to about £180 a month, so there were roughly 5 to the £....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Interesting. I guess it crashed in the early years of this century - it was 7.1 to the £ in Spring 2004, and after falling briefly went over 6 to the £ in the Spring of 2005 when I guess many Poles were looking at coming here. So 4.6 must be a bit of a shock.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -
2003: £1 = 7.3 PLN
2008: £1 = 4.6 PLN
Consider faster growth in Poland, rising salaries, better quality of life and you know why the hottest topic among many Poles in the UK now is "how to get a full deposit back from a landlord ?" and "how to transfer a large amount of British pounds back to Poland".0 -

It's pretty sick how the BTL landlords who have pushed prices out of reach of first time buyers and caused misery for millions laugh and cackle about it.Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.0 -

I think 2004 was when they had a bit of a mad time in Polish politics and voted in twins as finance minister and PM (or president?).0 -

Are you communicating to us from 1994?
Unless I am mistaken, £650 a week is alot more than £2000 a month!!!!0 -
What everyone seems to be missing here is not that rents are rising in some areas ( they may be, they may not be) but the OP is looking for outside space in the next place, which they dont have now.
We too had to have outside space as we have a dog, in the last rented place we looked and there is PLENTY in leytonstone ( upper is better than the leyton end IMHO) for 800pcm with gardens. We paid 758 in E11 it was beautiful , right by the forest 10 mins from tube, no crime/hoodies/ etc to talk of. Yes its not full of delis but its 5 stops into liverpool street.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-20021345.rsp?pa_n=4&tr_t=rent ( great area, delis, good reasturaunts, wanstead is gorgous)
or a 2 bed house? http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-19803965.rsp?pa_n=4&tr_t=rent

and so on and so on
Greenwich has always been quite expensive, given its chi-chi centre and cafe culture. However, if you can sacrifice that, you can still find some excellent rental prices within zone 3 if you hunt it out
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

To get the same kind of thing anywhere in London that isnt a chav filled hell hole or someplace English is only spoken as a 3rd language would now cost at least £1000 pcm. A 2 bed is looking at £1250.
When did this happen? Around new year £1000 was plenty to get a 2 bed somewhere like Wimbledon or Willesden Green as long as you didnt want to be right necxt to the Tube.
I just searched 2 beds £1000pcm on Rightmove in some areas we're interested in and.... nothing.
There seem to be loads of 2 bed places under £1k a month in nice places, to me, in SE10 (Greenwich) and SE3 (Blackheath), for example.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-20141321.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
This is £750 a month, in SE10, "The property comprises two small double bedrooms, fitted kitchen with appliances, good size lounge, three piece bathroom suite and gas central heating." Close to Westcombe Park station as well.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-17169778.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
Or, for £900 a month:
"Good size lounge and open plan fitted kitchen with all appliances, 2 double bedrooms both with double beds, bathroom with shower facility and large rear garden with sole use.
Fitted carpets throughout, full gas central heating and neutral decor."
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-7407736.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
You are right next to the heath here - and Wat Tyler road is a seriously nice area, overlooks Blackheath, multi-million pound houses around you.
"Two bedroom, 1st floor purpose built flat, situated on the open heath with views across Blackheath & Greenwich Park. Well located for Lewisham BR/DLR & the centre. Bright reception room with private balcony, fully fitted kitchen with dining area, master bedroom with a range of built in wardrobes, Second double bedroom & bathroom with shower. Off street parking, communal gardens. Unfurnished, with garage."
For £950 a month.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-20012762.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
"A two double bedroom second floor flat with double glazing, gas central heating, communal gardens and a neutral decor. The kitchen comprises of a cooker, fridge/freezer and washing machine."
That's near Westcombe Park, in SE3, and £850 a month.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-19624085.rsp?pa_n=2&tr_t=rent
ANother 2 bed for £1k per month, "Two bedroom conversion flat. Unfurnished. Newly refurbished. New fitted kitchen with w/m. G. C. H. Blackheath Standard location. BR 5 mins Charing Cross 20 mins"
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-19932854.rsp?pa_n=2&tr_t=rent
3 bed near Blackheath station, close to the heath as well.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-16866445.rsp?pa_n=3&tr_t=rent
"Spacious three bedroom unfurnished purpose built apartment with open plan reception room, light kitchen with built-in appliances, bathroom, separate W.C two double bedrooms plus single/study room. Walking distance to Westcombe Park mainline station and close to Blackheath Village. Communal garden area." for £1,100 a month.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-19696208.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
In Wimbledon, you can be 300 yards from the station for £1,095 per month, in a 2 bed.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-19960034.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
"Situated only five minutes walk from Willesden Green tube station, this lovely two double bedroom flat boasts wood floors, spacious lounge and a fully fitted kitchen with all modern appliances." for a 2 bed, 200 yards from Willeseden Green tube, and £225 per week.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-17360921.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=rent
£1k a month, close to WG tube, converted Victorian house.
These are only some examples - it's clear that there is a choice of stuff for £1k a month or less, 2 beds, in all the areas you mentioned....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I am gobsmacked by the rents some people seem to pay round these forums.
When you compare them to the income of a single, normal person.
Maybe salaries are higher where those people live, or the forum attracts a higher percentage of "posher people", even though you don't see yourselves as posher people.
I've no idea if rents have risen where I live because I am not moving. And I guess that's how it works, you only realise things when you need to make a change. I've been where I am 6 months, just slipped onto a periodic tenancy from an AST. Rent staying the same. Cardiff.0
