Is it just me or are rents skyrocketing?

Our tenant is moving out of our studio flat in Milton Keynes.
A 20 quid advert in the local paper led to around 30 phone calls to rent it out. Tenant moving out on Saturday, new couple moving in on Monday...refused all offers of a lick of paint, general clean up etc.
Previous rent was at £425pcm (has been for about two years) and new guys paying £450.
I think it's all about being realistic on price.0 -
We have a significant-sized deposit as neither of us have ever been big spenders and we have therefore been 'saving' (living within our means) for the last 10 years. We are buying ex-la, which means we are getting more space for our money, but in my earlier post I compared the rental costs with another ex-la block in the area.
Ah. Right. That's a different comparison then - in my view to compare the relative costs of a mortgage and renting, you have to either work out what the mortgage would be with no deposit, or subtract the interest you're earning on your deposit from the rent.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -

We are also in Durham. We moved into this property in October 2007. There are properties in nice areas of Durham still to let now which were available when we started looking in June/July 2007. Some have lowered the rent or expectations of tenants (still many awkward no DSS, no children, no pets etc ones still but many have changed their minds) some are at the same rental price, but still empty. Nothing wrong with a number of them which we did view but decided against. I do get a little annoyed that maybe we could be paying less (12 month lease so stuckered) for a larger, newer property, 4 bed new builds for less than I am paying for a 3 bed 1970s property. Nevermind.One day I might be more organised...........

Lots of Poles going home according to BBC1 News tonight. It's not a zero sum game: if rents rise then Poles & other immigrants will go elsewhere. They may not be able to make so much money, but if their net disposable income is higher then why stay. I believe that gross incomes in Poland rose by 6.8% last year and the work culture allows for rather more lifestyle than in the UK too I think. That's the average figure and normally wages for skilled workers rise faster than those for the unskilled so perhaps the ubiquitous Polish Plumber is off back to Poznań.
I understand that taxes are on the lower side of crazy too unlike in the Mussolini-aspirational state in which we live.0 -
according to Silvertits the pound has dropped 25% against the zloty in the last 6 months tooI believe that gross incomes in Poland rose by 6.8% last year and the work culture allows for rather more lifestyle than in the UK too I think. up in the north there are so so many places to rent..... i'm in manchester and since there are so many new blocks of student accommodation flying up, i think a lot of houses traditionally rented by students aren't being taken. it's certainly a renters market up here - lots on offer and you can pick and choose and haggle! i guess london will always have a different pattern to everywhere else though. too few houses for too many people; i couldn't afford to go back down south these days!:happyhear0

On 14th March 2007, a quid would buy PLN 5.7. 14th March 2008 it was PLN 4.6 (according to XE.com). 19% drop in the Quid/PLN rate in a year. That's a big hit if you're saving to start a business/family back in Poland.0 -
