The easiest way to recover lost data is to run a linux CD from the CD drive. I would recommend PC Linux 2007 which can be downloaded here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_ionFiles&func=download&Itemid=34
This is an iso image and you would have to tell your burning software that (otherwise just the image would be burned, which is like a zipped file, and it would be useless).
Once burnt, reboot the PC with the CD in the drive and make sure that the first boot drive is the CD drive or else you will boot into windows. It will take some time to boot and it might ask you some easy questions. Once you are in you would have access to your windows partitions. If the files there are not corrupted, you can easily copy then onto a pen drive.

CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE?
I've got my ie working now but it won't react to links, it just opens a blank new window. Even if I cut and paste a new link into it, it won't open the page.
Additional although I've lost my settings I still have all my folders. My desktop is almost bank but I have a desktop folders with all my old icons in it, so why can't I see them on the desktop itself.
Additionally I have all my old web favourites in the folders but it is not linking to IE. I've tried importing them but to no avail.
Thanks in advance0 -
create a new user profile/account , and use the internet from that profile, what happens?0
-
I want to retain the user profile I already have0

check C:/documents and settings to see how many user folders there are,it may be there are two ,one you are now using and one that is what you were using before. Both will have favourites and desktop folders etc but only one will have your old settings etc in it. If windows has made a new one you can probably just copy the folders to the new one to use it.I had 2 the same at one point and it had added a ~to the beginning of one of them.0

Thanks for the reply.
There appears to be 2 administrator folders in doc and settings. The 2nd one is adminstrator.ENS. Although I'm not using my home PC at the mo, from memory I think it contains the same files as the administrator folder.
Does that make sense?0 -
Alik, your remedy was very sparse on detail and I have no wish to further complicate my PC problem by setting up new accounts.
thanks anyway0 -
well, it's vwery simple
you need to determine where the problem is
therefore
go into control panel, user accounts, create a new user account, sign intio windows on that account, see if the internet works
if it does, your problem is account related and we can work to fix that
or
it's not account related and we can look elsewhere
to me it sounds like it's your account so you need to try this0 -
It's not account related.
Is anyone else up for the challenge?0
