Hi gang, you've delivered in the past I can only pray you can help me again.
I turned on my PC this morning to find it had lost many of my previous settings eg. the majority of my desktop icons had disappeared, the internet connection wizard had appeared asking me to set a new connection, the quick launch toolbar is empty etc.
I have many photos on the machine which are vital and for the moment I don't think they are lost. The main thing is the internet and I haven't a scooby on how to set up my sky broadband box again.
My PC runs on Windows 2000 and I have tried following the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240363 but to no avail as there was no sysvol folder on my PC. I'm I barking up the wrong tree?
Please help.

Have you tried a System Restore. Start, Accessories, System Tools, System restore.0
-
There is no system restore option available on my Windows 2000 PC.
Thanks anyway0 -
Make sure you have not changed user.
Can you log off to see user names available?0 -
Thanks I'll try that tonight when i get home.
I hope its as simple as that.0 -

Then you'd better make sure your backups are up-to-date! Eventually your hard drive WILL fail. If you don't have a working backup all those "vital" photos could be gone in the blink of an eye.0 -
Unfortunately it wasn't as simple as changing back the username.
The settings are still lost but I do have the internet back but only via firefox and not internet explorer. Everytime I press the IE icon it starts up the internet connection wizard.
Why?

Its the username and passwrod that needs to be correct, you have not lost everything so dont worry ....try again0

thanks for replying
The dialog box defaults at administrator and there's no need for a password. This has been the case for the 5 years I've had it.0 -
I'll take a wild stab stab guess your user profile has become corrupted.
you can google that yourself but this was my first hit, and it's how to check if thats the problem so might be worth a crack
