original wooden sash windows..HELP

I totally agree - plastic windows have destroyed the character of houses the country over. It's a crime.
And they're not environmentally friendly. They only last 10-20 years (the wooden windows in our house have been here 150 years). They take a lot of energy to produce. They do not biodegrade when thrown away. They are plastic so production introduces plasticisers into the water which is making all the male creatures on the planet female.
They do not save money - they cost far more to instal and replace than they save in heating bills.
They do not solve all your condensation problems - they just move them. Most houses they are installed in are not designed for them so the condensation problem just moves to a nearby cold bridge - usually the brick window surround.
Please avoid them like the plague! :eek:0 -
Thanks guys - don't worry, I wouldn't dream of upvc as the old wooden frames managed to survive 100 years to their credit. Debt_Free_Chick, thanks for the background reading, which I'll study.0

Try The orginal Box sash window comapany based in windsor they are the only company (or were) that had permission to put their orginal design wooden framed box sash DOUBLE galzing windows in listed buildings. They used a rubber strip instead of aluminum strip between the two pieces of glass hence making it a lot thinner and more practical for sash windows. they were also guranteed for life ( https://www.boxsash.com/_go/1-1helpdesk_go.html )Money's too tight to mention!!!0 -
hi
we tried the above company and they were expensive (in our opinion)
we eventually did replace our windows with upvc, the honey oak wooden looking ones, and some ppl cant even tell the difference! and we are so glad we did it, the house looks better without the painted frames and its sooo much warmer and quieter. i still love sash wondows but in our case, on a 2bed teerace, we felt resale would be better with doble glazing and not the upkeep of the windows0 -

We are in the process of having Ventrolla draft proof our front windows. We've paid £1500 for them to do the windows in 3 different rooms. They said this would take 3 days. The first day everything went as planned. The second day (yesterday), the guy rang saying he couldn't come to work because he had a stomach bug. I was appalled the company didn't send a replacement, after all, I had paid my money to a company, not to a particular person. Today, the guy hasn't turned up and neither he or the company have bothered to contact us. So far I am extremely dissatisfied with Ventrolla's service.0

Hi Emmab
I too have very old sash windows and live in a conservation area nr Guildford I had mine refurbished by a company called Heritage Sash Windows in Shere nr Guildford they made a good job and now no more draughts or rattles. They are not cheap but it was worth it. They can do double glazed units if you are not in a conservation area or a listed building. Link heritagetimberproducts.co.uk or heritagesashwindows.com0 -
We specialise in sash window refurbishment and replacement and we are a nationwide company

I make boxframed sash windows and they can be made to work well with draught excluders etc.Try this company , I use them and they are a good company to deal with and there are also video,s on the website to help..they have "sash window television"..lol

Renovating sash windows isn't a specialised job, the draught excluders are available ,fit easily and don't cost the earth. The biggest problem I see on a regular basis is people forget to weigh the sashes, so they can't get the right weights.Slightly overweight the (outside)upper sash and make the (inside) lower sash spot on.You can buy a set of fishermans scales for about £4-00 and they are accurate enough.
