original wooden sash windows..HELP

Options
our windows are 105yrs old, well the house is and no sign of windows been changed
they are single pane wooden sash. we want to know what we can do with them in relation to stopping th noise, we have already had them 'sealed' well some compnay came made lotsa promises and basically pu clear sealant around the edges. this has stopped the drafts

we love the look of them and the rest of our house is very in keeping with the look, wooden floors boards, firep[lace original, coving etc so we really dont want to, and cant afford to, put upvc in

does any1 have any ideas or knowledge? can we put new panes in? any compnies that deal with them?

There was a company doing a proper overhaul & double glaze service, mentioned in the colour magazine section of Mail on Sunday, about 6 weeks back.

Can't recall name, but maybe a searcxh on their website????

    Remember it being £500ish/window!!!

There is a franchise called Ventrola, who specialise in sash windows and draughtproofing, they are not cheap, but from what Ive seen the product is excellent!! I have made hundreds of these windows, and the reason they rattle is just the way they have to be made, Unless you start with draughtstrips in them, its almost impossible to make them without some form of rattle....

We had a similar problem with sash windows and when I first refurbished them in our hoiuse about 15 years ago I was able to get some new sashes made at a local timber merchant/workshop and some I stripped and re glazed.

This time round we decided to make them more efficient and I have had new sashes made with deeper rebates for the glass which allow me to put in DG units where the single glazed panes were before. Because this makes the sash a lot heavier I have fitted springs rather than increasing the counter weights and also fitted draught excluder round each sash. Pikard hardware in Keighley have all the bits including custom springs and the proper draught excluder ( I'm just a customer!). The downside is that this is quite expensive when compared with modern uPVC but I prefer timber windows.

Yes ventrolla draught proof the existing windows....To dampen the noise, try a secondary glazing unit....like a window inside the existing window..
