Removing varnish and gloss painting stairs

Hi there,

I was wondering if there are any painter/decortaors and DIYers out there who could advise the best way to go about painting my stairs?

I wish to paint them gloss white. The existing finish is antique pine varnish.

Are there any particular products to recommend or any long term durable techniques to adopt?

You will need to sand them before glossing. Best to use an electrical sander as it will be a lot of work..

we have been doing this all week! we sanded, then applied a primer coat, followed by 2 coats of undercoat and now have used dulux satinwood instead of gloss and it looks fantastic. i have only ever used white gloss paint before but after recommendations from this board i tried satinwood and it gives a lovely finish. I will probably give it another coat and then i'm done!

p.s we have been sanding inbetween each coat as well.
p.p.s we used electric sander on flat bits and the 3M sanding pads (from b&q, homebase, wickes etc) on all the spindles etc as you can bend them easily.
