I had the very old book, with rock buns in, then got a newer one and the amount of sugar in the cakes has been cut down. I think the original was four oz of sugar and the new one was 3, tasted very different so we went back to the original 4.

Rock buns are just the easiest thing to make.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I never cut down the sugar in baking it can be quite dramatic in the final taste.
For rock buns I always use 4ozs sugar and butter to 8ozs of SR flour and they turn out fine everytime.

Make them larger, decorate with almonds and cherries, and you have Yorkshire Fat Rascals:

Good luck. I don't have much joy with fairy cakes or scones either! I've decided that weetabix cake or banana loaf is more my style as they seem to be idiot proof and I need idiot proof recipes!

You can't go far wrong with rock cakes.

Rub butter into flour, add sugar, fruit and mixed spice and add milk/water/egg to combine and cook.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
  • Well they're out and not really 'rock' but they do taste good....what are weetabix cakes Aril... Yea thats the recipie i used basmic, but I will admit I added a teaspoon of baking powder as someone said thats why the scones didnt rise???

Hi I found a recipie for rock buns in an old bero cookbook the otherday and decided to have a go.

I messed about a bit with the recipie and added some mixed spice and a bit more fruit , but they turned out sooooooooooo nice :j

We live in Yorkshire and have betty's tea rooms where we are and they make a famous rock bun called a fat rascal and i'm not joking mine were nearly as good .

I'm so pleased as its been the highlight of my week, my little ones love fat rascals and were so impressed with my version .

Bettys charge over £1 each for theirs

Next week i'm going to have a go at Betty's version of a little rascal which is a rock bun but with choclate chips and more peel and orange flavour.

mmmmmmmmmmm think i will have to go eat another now.
