possible reloction to Newark,Notts. Whats it like?!

The OH may have to relocate and we were thinking of Newark, Notts as a potential place to buy. I haven't been following prices there at all and wondered if anyone knows the current situation with regard to this.

Also how is the area? What is there to do in town for 30 somethings? Are there nice bars and restaurants? Saying that, I'd really like the outskirts.. somewhere horsey if anyone knows where these areas are? Any info would be great!

many thanks!

Hi I live outside Newark It's a lovely market Town with a few nice Bistro's but if you want a decent night Out you need to head either to Lincoln or Mansfield.
Most of the surrounding area is 'horsey' Places like Southwell,Ollerton,Farnsfield .
    The train/bus links are good.
If you want to know anymore i would be happy to help

  • The villages surrounding Newark, best areas to the west and south-west ie southwell, halam, edingley, maplebeck, caunton, hockerton, bleasby etc are very desirable, due to the fact they have excellent schools in the vacinity,it is very picturesque and in fact there are some of the best restaurants in Notts here, I have recently renovated a property in one of these villages and it is the best thing we have done it is lovely, nice people and v.tidy, people seem to care about how things are. Much better than most of Notts which I have lived in in the past. I am a thirty something, and my husband and I have made lots of friends in the area, which also has fantastic links to the A1/Nottingham/Mansfield and the main trainstation for London 1h 20 from here. I am sure that you would find plenty to do, just watch you dont buy too near to the river trent, villages close to here have some Major issues due to flooding.
Any queries, pm me I would love to help you, perhaps a tour if you visit!!
    Take care

We moved up here from the South Coast two years ago and love it. We are 12miles from Newark and often go there for market day. Lots to do in and around the town, petrol and beer are much cheaper!

I'd avoid Mansfield for a night out. It looks nice in the day but it's full of idiots. I lived there during my teenage years and learnt how to behave.

I told my girlfriend how it was on a night out one year, when visiting my parents. "Don't look anyone in the eye or engage them in conversation" I said, "it'll only end in trouble."

    Cut to chip shop.

Girlfriend engages Neanderthal in brief conversation.

He 'offers us all out' (No intelligent reason required)

It wasn't for dinner, I hastily add.

    Sigh...

Newark's not too bad from what I've seen, but the town centre can be a bit chavvy at night, lots of young in baseball caps and noisy cars.

    (snobs eye view)

The castle looks good at sunset though!

  • I spent the first the first 18 years of my life living in Newark, couldn't wait to move out to the big city. Now i am nearing thirty, married, with a huge mortgage and a 5 month old i can really appreciate what Newark has to offer. House prices are good, the local comp did me no harm and the town centre has a few nice bars and some lovely restaurants. It is a way to the nearest city, 16 to Lincoln and 18 to Nottingham, but 50 mins and you are in Leeds, and just over 2 hours in London. The only down side is that there is a huge permenent gypsy site by the river and this can cause problems, some of the towny pubs are best avoided.
  • Drrascals reply spot on. I would look at one of the villages just outside Newark. Muskham, Collingham, Winthorpe, Claypole. Balderton os OK, too. If you have seconondary school age kids the schools arent great, alot of people pay to have their kids bussed out to schools in Grantham or Lincoln.

It is a really decent place to live, one thing tho, the council tax is about the second highest in the UK so be warned!

Pm me if you would like any more info cos I have lived here 16 years.
    Good luck x

Oy! My hubby teaches at one of those schools :p!! Two of the schools in Newark are merging this year so not sure what is going to happen. Anyway, we live in a lovely village about 20 mins away (easier commute for hubby) and can honestly say it was the best thing we have ever done! So I would recommend the villages in and around Bingham, also East Bridgford, Lowdham, Gunthorpe (potential to flood in areas), Woodborough. All near major roads to Newark. Best thing to do is post a link to anything you are looking at and then we can comment. I personally wouldnt want to live in Newark but its an ok place for shops.
    Hope this helps.

  • Was born and have been brought up in Newark - and, after several years away at university and early jobs, have returned here to bring up my own family!

Nottinghamshire is hardly the most fashionable county in the UK but that has its own rewards - property is reasonable and plenty of choice for horsey types! I live in a village about 10 miles north of Newark, we have excellent primary and secondary schools (The Minster in Southwell is the pick of the bunch but Tuxford has also been completely rebuilt in the last couple of years), Nottingham is 40 minutes away and London a mere 1 hour 20 minutes in the main east coast line. There are some great restaurants in Newark (Cafe Bleu and the new fish restaurant Salt) and some equally good ones in the villages (The Caunton Beck is in every good food guide!).

My advice would be to check out some of the villages to the north of Newark - Caunton, Norwell, Eakring, Mablebeck (gorgeous, with the smallest pub in the UK there!), Laxton, Kneesall, Ossington. As you move further from Nottingham, you'll find your money goes much further - and the horey types become more plentiful!

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

We've recently moved to Forest Town (not a million miles from Newark) from way down south. A massive move for us but living almost next door to Sherwood Forest and the friendly neighbourhood have made it all worth while.

    Good luck
