That is exactly what makes them stop taking coupons! Its one thing to use £10 worth on a £90 spend but you are expecting to only pay £15 on a £30 spend!
This is why they make new policies which we all suffer for-because a few people get greedy!

Sorry this is alarmist and not correct.

As ragtimeplayer says, Tesco policy that was sent to stores specifically says 'a customer can pay for their whole shopping with coupons' if they have enough different, acceptable ones.

How much clearer could they have stated it? Why should we all impose our own made-up limits when the policy is clear at the mo (to stores who actually read the info last June).

And who is to say that anyone's made-up limit would make any difference to anything, if they want to change the policy again they will - and IMHO it won't be as a result of couponers like myself, ragtimeplayer and others who are handing in all-different, redeemable coupons.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is they may clamp down on internet prints as it's silly that we can print off so many of the non-Couponnet ones. The amount being printed off freely and used at every shop must be hard for Supermarkets (not just Tesco but also Asda and Waitrose) to actually redeem. I'm thinking mainly of the abuse/overuse (whatever you want to call it) of the free Diet Coke coupon that was around in January, I doubt they could get the money back on all those!

If it were me in charge at Tesco HQ, I would simply say that you have to buy the product when using a printed coupon. Simple.

Maybe they will also tighten up on use of out-of-date coupons which must be a problem, as well as Somerfield/Sainsburys/Asda logo coupons, and Daily Mail book tokens, which some people persist in using. The only way to cover these though would be by better staff training, as the barcode systems used mean they still scan regardless of date and Supermarket logo. Can't see them paying for a more sophisticated till system to sort it out!

  • Well i was told in my Tesco that i am only allowed to use coupons up to a quarter of the bill and they sooncome running if you try and use more.
  • I have asked in my Tesco, and have been told by certain supervisors that I can use as many coupons as I want. Other supervisors will have different policies. I always accept what they tell me, without argument...

My coupons are always in date, and I only ever use one of each. I quote from the email that I have received from Tesco "We're hapy to accept a non-Tesco coupon, even if you don't buy them item. But, the coupon must be in date and the store must sell the product. If you present more than one identical coupon you need to purchase the same number of products. This also includes coupons printed from the internet, but these will only be accepted at the discretion of the store manager"

Different stores, different supervisors have different policies.... For what it's worth, I only managed to hand over 2 coupons today... But Monday may be a different matter

  • Im not saying what is right or wrong as regards policy! My comments have been taken out of context. If their policy is to accept any amount-fair enough-up to a point only though.
What happens then if we all start turning up wanting a free shop? What is the "acceptable" limit?Morally speaking I mean-that is, if there are any morals left in society. Do you truly believe it will just go on, ignored? It may be their policy right now-tho they could change it at any time, letter or no letter.
Forget policy-this is pure and simple greed. Im no tesco supporter by the way-I avoid the place lately for their greediness in what they are doing in many areas.
On the occassions Ive been there in the past with coupons, the policy I was quoted was that they would accept up to 3 coupons.
A few people in each store each day, taking advantage, just spoils it for everyone else. It gets back to head office what happened in each store and the policies get changed just because the minority get greedy. If all coupon users were reasonable(as most of us are) and didnt go to such extremes they would go unoticed and there just may be more leniancy in more stores. Regarding internet coupons-well-its like printing money!I can certainly understand why they often refuse. Waitrose wont accept internet coupons. Again, this was spoiled because some people were taking the mickey!

What happened to 'be nice to moneysavers'? When you post in this tone, punctuated with exclamation marks, it comes across as judgemental and self-righteous. We don't actually know anything about why or why not supermarkets may change their coupon policy. I personally feel that calling someone greedy is a moral judgement which, if you can't help making it, is best left unsaid.

That is totally unreasonable and also wrong.

Tesco have said numerous times that you can pay for your entire shopping with coupons if you have enough different ones and they are all valid and in date.

I reguarly pay only 10% of my shopping bill in cash by using lots of different coupons and I am totally within my rights to do so as told by Tesco themselves.

Hear hear, couldn't agree more. It isn't the amount of coupons you use, the problem is people who give in coupons for other stores and such like. I've done the same as ragtimeplayer for years. There's one cashier at ours always asks do I have any more, cos if I have, might as well use em!

You are the lucky one there! I would love to meet that one!!! I have met a lovely lad who supervises the self scanning till, he will actually help me scan the coupons through and then actually post them in the coupon slot for me.. however he is a very part time worker. I did decide to discuss career options with him the other day, but most in-consideratly (? spelling) he has his heart set on some other line of work, medicine or something daft!!! On well..................

    lol.
There is a real mixture in mine. You may have read my post about the snotty old bag who told the lad serving me he couldn't take my coupons. The SA came over and confirmed provided they were different and in date he could, and she wouldn't even look at him. Then there's this lovely lady who I've come to know, who says, "I'll take as many as you have provided they're different and in date. No skin off my nose"

She even says, "They're jealous some of them, think they're reimbursing the coupons from their own pocket!"

I just worry about when the bubble will burst as apparently there are a couple of men who go in and give in any old coupons and sometimes the youngsters don't check and take them. This will just make them stop taking them so I make the most of it while i can without abusing the policy :D

    Hear hear discodee! :T

With coupons in T, it's the ABUSERS (regularly using a few dodgy coupons) not the USERS (using lots but all different & redeemable) that will bring about a tightening up of the policy.

Angelatgraceland, I don't understand this quote, below?????:

'QUOTE: If their policy is to accept any amount-fair enough-up to a point only though'.

Not all stores know it but Tesco policy IS to accept any amount and the wording actually said 'a customer can pay for their whole shopping in coupons'. Not 'up to a point' and I am sure by 'whole shopping' they weren't thinking of a fiver or so! I saw the original wording from HO issued last Summer, it's in a policy book behind some CS desks in stores where they know the policy.
