Can anyone recommend any good animal shelters or rescue centres. I am ideally after a puppy or young dog! (would go for an older one if it was just my husband and I), but have 3 young kids. I live in the midlands but am prepared to travel.

There's a list of centres here

Be aware that many rescues, especially the larger ones, won't rehome to families with very young children. If that applies to you, you might need to contact a few before you find one who will be flexible. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
Wood Green at Huntingdon are very good, have a wide choice of dogs. Also if you are anywhere around this area

they are very dedicated too and you can see what there is to choose from first.
Do let us know how you get on!!0 -
my dog came from here, she is fab, but they only house within a 50 mile raduis, I think - but may be worth ringing to ask if you are just outside that

One of mine came from The Dogs Trust and my friend has just adopted a puppy from The Blue Cross . Very long wait for puppies though.
And good on you for choosing to rescue and not go to a puppy farm. :T
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

https://www.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk will rehome to families with young children guaranteed. The dogs are often quite young as well, dont be fooled by the word retired!:j0

Try looking on the rescue pages of www.obedienceuk.com or www.agilitynet.co.uk as these often have dogs needing homes on them.0

They are often only 3 or 4 years old, and they do sometimes take in Lurchers (although these are more often unwanted pets).https://www.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk will rehome to families with young children guaranteed. The dogs are often quite young as well, dont be fooled by the word retired!:j
Some family friends have rescued quite a few over the years, and they always get them from there. I know that out of probably 8 dogs that I can remember, only one has been of the "!!!!!! scared of everything variety" - most are fine and adapt very well, despite having spent their entire lives in kennels.
Also, if there is a particular breed you are after, then try the breed rescue. We got our pomeranian from the breed rescue (although I wouldn't have a pom with three young children TBH) and they were very good.0 -
With young children I'd be more inclined to get a slightly older dog than a young one - many family dogs find themselves homeless for many reasons - family breakups, financial problems or illness. You could get a loving childfriendly fully trained dog who is very much in need of a home and would fit in your home perfectly - as opposed to a puppy which needs: toilet training, puppy socialising classes, obedience classes, basic manners training (and not to mention the MANY shoes and remotes you are likely to have chewed :rotfl:)
Just a thought...

What are you going to do if they have an older boxer, but it has it's tail?
