I left Lloyds tsb in disgust at the way they treated me, but rather than closing the account totally, i downgraded to a free account, and have left 6p in there, so that they have to send me statements & new cards, but they are earning b*gger all interest. Occasionally I get a letter about not using my account enough, so I pay in £10 then take it straight out again :D
I dd exactly the same as yourself. Left a small amount of money in the account moved to another bank and made sure they send me out a statement every month and downgraded it to a free account. They used to be called Noddy's Toy Town Bank.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

Having worked in another bank for years my advice to you is.....

Go back to the branch, as much of a pain it is, approach Miss Bright & Breezy and say ooh hello do you remember me, I saw you a few weeks back to close my account? She will either say no or should remember, bear in mind that part of a bank staffs job is to remember their customers, if she spent a fair amount of time serving you then she should do. If she does then chances are Miss B&B has probably not realised the trouble she has caused you so will say Oh yes of course I do....bingo, you then tell her what she has done and ask to speak to the manager to recover your charges, cancel any other charges due and close the account.

If she says she doesnt remember you then remind her of the transaction and tell her what you want done. If she denies all knowledge then go straight to the manager, your proof is in the withdrawal of the whole balance at the counter..which is out of character with the way you have run the account previously.

I'm sure you will get back the charges. Good luck ;)

The OP states she signed a form to close the account. Would the name of the staff member dealing with it be on there? Just a thought if she doesn't remember her?

They are claiming there's no record of the request to close the account, so presumably the documentation is lost.

so I went to the cash desk to get my money.

This transaction will be on the computerised daily till audit, or whatever they call it. Unless Miss B&B gave you the dosh from her purse
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

Chances are either the form is in Miss B&B's pile of 'to do' and has not moved off of her pile to the correct department. She may of been off sick or had to go to cover another branch....this happens a lot and nobody takes over that pile of work. OR it was sent via the internal mail dept and has gone astray. Either way its not OP's fault. Everyone makes mistakes but its how they rectify them that matters. Blaming the customer is not the right way as in this situation he has done everything correctly. Although they have no record of the documents this only means it was never received by the right dept to be actioned it does not mean they did not exist in the first place. The form should of been signed by Miss B&B.

The withdrawal from the counter will have the exact details of when OP went to the branch time, date, etc. Which will also tally with when Miss B&B was working at her desk. I cannot see a problem as long as OP goes back to the same branch.

    HTH :D

you could cause a fuss and ask the bank to view the cctv on that date, as if she ripped up the cheque book in front of you as per the origional post, surely the cctv will pick this up, and if it does you can ask why else would they do that apart from you asking them to close down the account

This happened to me early 2006.

Me and OH had split up and were closing a joint account with Lloyds TSB. We both went to the branch, both signed a form and were given the 11p which was remaining in the account.

About 6 months later, I received a statement for the same account.

Confused, I rang them and asked why it was still open when we had closed it. I was told that there was no record of it ever being closed.

I gave them the date it was closed, the branch it was closed at and I mentioned that there should be 11p showing as withdrawn that day.

Nothing was showing on the system at all apart from the 11p being withdrawn.

I was told I'd be sent more forms to fill in & sign, and although I said it wasn't good enough as I wasn't in touch with OH for him to sign, they never appeared.

I then went into the same branch to ask about closing it (again!) and was told it was frozen so it couldn't be closed (I went bankrupt in October 2006)?!

It's still frozen to this day ~ I can't use it, I can't close it, but I can log onto internet banking and access the account although I can't do anything with it.

They haven't got a bloody clue what they are doing!
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • Im so angry with LLoydsTsb right now...
The day before I moved house I went into the bank to change my address details.
2 weeks afterwards they sent a paying in book (that I didnt even request) to my previous address...Why would they be so reckless to do that?! After all when you ring them you have to go through 23847652978364 security questions and 43692891903846 passwords for online banking all for them to send your sort code and account numbers to an address where you dont live anymore. Crazy!
