Hmmmmm, your username, signature and general belief that you know the system inside out really dont show you in a good light Im afraid.

I do think that your *advice* should be taken with a pinch of salt!

    Hi snoop,

You would be eligible for the disability premium if you were entitled to IS.

The age addition is for IB, not IS, hence why it does not mention it in your quoted information.

You don't say how old you are? This would enable us to provide a breakdown of exactly what you would be entitled to on each.

    Hey thanks DMG!!!

It's all too confusing at times. I am 46. I suffer from longterm spine problems , arthiritis and other mental health issues. Two weeks ago I had a bath seat fitted, hand rails and tap devices. My DLA claim was 2 years ago and my Keyworker wants to make a super something claim for DLA because she said my health has got worse. I have never had a keyworker before so all this stuff is new to me... in my determination to help myself, I signed up to go to college but the steps and the journey has had a very bad impact on my health. Due to immense pain, my left leg is often numb and my incontinence has never been this bad... so at the moment I am housebound as my walking has become worse.

As you were under 45 when you qualified, you will receive the following for IB:

    £81.35 + £8.55 = £89.90

For IS, you would have received:

    £59.15 + £25.25 = £84.40 plus your full HB and CTB entitlement

Are you receiving the disability premium on your HB? If not, from the figures given this would mean you should get all of your rent paid. Definitely worth checking if you're not sure.

It sounds like your Key Worker thinks you should reapply for DLA due to your condition worsening. They will know how to complete the forms so as to maximise your eligibility. Hopefully an increase in DLA will counteract your shortfall in rent and HB.

At the moment, I assume you are paying for prescriptions? If so, you may be able to get help through the NHS Low Income Scheme. If you cannot get help through the scheme, it would be worth getting a prepayment certificate (you can pay by direct debit if you cannot pay in one go).

    Hey DMG!

I looked at my last housing benefit assessment. income used in calculation is what you quoted £89.90. There is no benefit from what I can see for the disability premium in Housing benefit. I am not sure how to go about this, so I will ask my keyworker to have a look. She is coming to see me at home next monday to sort out my benefits.

I don't have to pay for my prescriptions have got one of those HC2 certificates. Thanks so much for your assistance. its been a great help to me. I shall pass this info to my keyworker.

    Cheers snoop

without the disability premium in your housing benefit, you would have pay to this amout towards your rent.

i.e. you say you now pay £6 towards your rent, without disability premium it would be £31.

when it comes to HB, i think the term "premium" is a bit misleading as it implies it is money you are given, when in fact "allowance" would be better as it means how much money you are allowed before it is taken into account when assessing your HB money.

so in a non a non disability case, the rate would be about £55, any monies above this then starts to be deducted from housing benefit.

in a disability case, you are allowed

    standard rate £55
    disability rate £25

    total £80

so your rent is assessed on money above this.

in your case, you get £86 per week, less the £80 allowance, hence you need to contribute £6 towards your rent.

before anyone points out, these figure are off the top of my head and that above your allowance rate your money is not deducted £ for £, but about 80% of it.
