Removing parcel tape from PVC door

Dear all,
The quick version: how do you get parcel tape off a PVC door? Efforts to scrub it off with warm soapy water unavailing. Failing that, can you paint a PVC door to hide the marks?
The longer version: We had a new back door installed in January and installed a cat flap for our 2 new rescue cats. Unfortunately one of the neighbourhood cats started banging his head against it and managed to burst in - so we stuck a tray over it outside with parcel tape until our cats were ready to be let outside. Finally took the tray off this weekend and now can't get the tape off!
Slight complication - my husband says the door is now 'ruined' and wants to take money out of his ISA and buy a new door!!! I think this is completely OTT - can any moneysavers out there help me persuade him to take a more reasonable course of action?

It may be worth trying another piece of sticky tape on top of the sticky residue. Replacing and tearing it off a few times, it sometimes works, but may not as you have already tried with soap and water.
Another thing to try is a lubricant spray such as WD40, and rubbing with a dry cloth. This is a great tip I picked up somewhere.
Incidently another very useful tip, for removing gloss paint and some oily marks, from your hands and skin,(or brush handle etc.) is to use baby oil it works a treat and smells nice too!0 -
Hi,
I would second the WD40, always handy, for lots of jobs, squeaks and stiffies.0 -

If WD40 doesn't work, try Sticky Stuff Remover, from Lakeland Plastics (mail order via their website).
I've used it for years, and it works! Also smells nice and "orangey" which is a bonus! HTH0 -
White spirit or turps usually works.0

..or methylated spirit0

I agree Turps or white spirit is a great un-greaser and also removed sticky reside.0

I'd go for that, we use a similar product at work and it brings off residue that meths will not touch, here is a link- http://buy.maplin.co.uk/Free_UK_Delivery/Label_Remover_25350/Label_Remover_25350.htm0 -
