Mrs E - i just said that i didnt feel I had the right to pass judgment when i could never be 100% sure i was making the right decision. I personally would feel very uneasy with it. Not that i think theres anything wrong with sending criminals to prison - id throw them all in if i could, but i just couldnt do jury duty
  • My jury service was waiting around for a few hours, told they didn't need me come back in 2 days (when other trials finish/ new start), not needed again.
Second week I counted as 1 of 15, no one was objected so walked back out of court. Sent home again. I did not get sworn in or sit on a trial, they did ask if anyone would take a long case- for 6 months but I said no.
I was relieved not to hear any gruesome details.
If your friend with new business defers, his next call up may be at a worse time + he will not be able to opt out. I would go at start of April - chances are he won't get picked or he'll be sent home to return in a few days. It's only for 2 weeks.

    :)

But how is that religious grounds? And passing "judgement" on whether you think someone is innocent or guilty is the whole point of being on the jury - yes you might get it wrong, but that is why you can only go on the evidence in front of you.

However, if it worked for you then I'll bear it in mind if I ever get called as I have no intention of ever having to do it - although not for the same reasons as you.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

Unless they exempt you for reason of mental incapacity, you will be recalled. You cannot refuse a second time.

One of my friends is doing jury service at the moment (well not today and Monday, obviously ) which she deferred from last year because they called her during the summer and she didn't want to do it then. When they called her this time she had no choice but to do it.

I was called for Jury service which would have been in february when i was 6/7 months pregnant. The courthouse was a bus ride, train ride and then a 2km walk from me, so I wrote to the court and said i was happy to do the jury service but could they arrange a return taxi trip between the court and the train station every day as i was suffering from fatigue and morning sickness.

This was a bit of an exaggeration, but I knew I would feel exhausted from this journey every day and felt if they paid taxi expenses for one part of the journey that would help matters. This request obviously marked me out as being a possible problem juror, so they rung me up and told me i was excused. Which was handy!

Maybe your OH could write asking for special dispensation/taxi expenses for some medical condition and they might think it not worth their while to have him as a juror after all?

  • I have just finished jury Service, I had one trial, lasted 4 days. Then we were not called for friday, and stood down.

As self employed I booked myself out for 2 weeks, as this is what I had expected.

I asked what would happen, as I cancelled my work and was not able to catch up and recover any loss, they paid the daily rate for 10 days!

It is not all bad, infact it is not as bad as you might expect you might even like it!

Having said that, they did find the thieving to$$pot guilty so obviously scruffy juries get the job done!
And if they had acquitted him, they would have got the job done. [I am sure you would agree]
