They could write to them to thank them saying that as a racist, sexist, homophobe they look forward to being able to sentencing people for long stretches in clinky. That should get them out of it sharpish!

My husband has just been summoned for jury service. He would really like to serve, but he is self employed and is just about holding onto his main contract by the skin of his teeth. Financially it would mean a loss £200 a day. Would they consider this a good enough reason to be excused?

I really enjoyed Jury service too!
2 weeks, got paid and enjoyed every minute
In fact...going back to work was a real let down, it was like I'd been living someone else's life for a while

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

Nearly had to do it one year - major panic as I am self employed and don't know how my very small business would have survived. To avoid future hiccoughs, I avoid registering as a voter. How bad/pathetic is that? What gets me is there is a massive pool of people they could call on, who would love to do it. Why can't they have a registered list of volunteers, who could be vetted as and if necessary?

Ive been called up but Im a full time uni student (year left after this one) and there is no way I could miss a few days of uni let alone 2 weeks!

Is this a good enough reason to be excused? I wouldnt mind doing it in future, but not now!

  • i refused on the grounds of religious views. i didnt feel it was my place to judge somebody. However the fact that it was a 2 hours drive away and i dont drive wouldnt have helped!

I got defered as I was 38 weeks pregnant at the time, I wrote to them giving the dates of my maternity leave and they defered it until I had returned to work. My work did try to defer/cancel it but weren't able to.

That said I sat on the first trial, was selected for the second (all short trials) but got objected to by the defendent, one they changed the plea to guilty before we were selected so there was a lot of sitting around doing nothing. Got out of making a decision on the last trial quite dramatically though, as got stung by a wasp during the summing up and had an anaphylactoid reaction - ended up with a foot three times the size of normal and fainting and vomiting.

They haven't called me back since, I wonder why?

I'm up for it on May the 14th, I'm not looking forward to it.

How did you get away with religious grounds?

    Unlikely.

Best you could do would be to ask for it to be deferred.

Alternatively he could do what I did - on his first day, speak to the bailiff (believe it or not they are human beings). I explained my situation and she said that she'd try and use me as little as possible (as luck would have it her husband was self-employed, so she fully understood). Ended up only having to go in for 2 days in total.

Or you could just say that you believe that people are guilty until proven innocent ;)
