Uh-oh... I renewed online today (before seeing this thread) :eek:I think you have it right, and those above who have renewed already have actually paid twice for March.
I saved each stage as a PDF and this is what it said at the confirmation page, looks fine to me:12 Months at a duty of: £115.00

The DVLA online can check if you have a current MOT and insurance. Surely they know when your current road tax is due to run out as well.
You have to use the reference number that was on your reminder - the reminder that tells you that it runs out on the 31st of March. 0 -
Perhaps the anomally is because some people are renewing having been sent their V11 (reminder) maybe pullip tears tried doing it without a V11?
Still, it makes no sense that they are allowing renewals before the 15th.0 -
Yes, I havent had my V11 reminder through yet so had to do it from my ref number on my V5.
I think those that have done it that way will be taxed for 11 months rather than 12. I didn't continue with it after it warned me

I haven't received my V11 yet, but I used the reminder email from the DVLA.
Now I'm just thinking, are they going to send me a reminder email next year? I ticked the box to say I didn't want to receive promotional material from them. Perhaps I shouldn't have done that, as it may mean I won't receive the email, and if the V11 gets delayed in the post next year I will have to pay the increased price.
So the moral, I think, is to let the DVLA add you to their mailing list. You can always delete any unwanted advertising/spam from them, but their reminder email next year will be useful.0 -
Hi
I have just been to the Post Office and they said I would lose one month if I do it before the 15th. I have done it online few moments ago and it went throught and I got the exact message Crabman had, but with £180.
So it is fine to do it online. Oh, I have no reminder and I used the ref. no. on the log book v5.
Many thanks to the OP whether the tax is going to go up tomorrow or not!Be nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
Hey just thought I'd help clear things up re the "15th of the month" thing.
The Post Office/DVLA office will only accept taxing for the 1st of the following month (ie 1st April) from the 15th of the month before (ie 15th March). This is a long standing agreement between DVLA and Post Office, and makes things generally easier for administration purposes and there has to be a cut-off/start point.
The only exception to this is in exceptional circumstances e.g. you will be abroad when tax is due, then you can tax up to 2 months in advance at a head PO or DVLA Office.
With the introduction of the electronic vehicle licencing (EVL) over phone or internet, many people would receive their V11 reminder forms around 10/11th of the month and would try to tax straight away online/over phone as they did not notice the "15th of the month" thing. They would then ring DVLA to say my reference number isn't working blah blah blah and we would have to point out the big shiny red letters telling them to wait til the 15th.
As EVL has taken off massively it was decided to allow people to tax from a bit earlier on in the month online/over phone to ease number of calls to DVLA questioning it and to spread the pressure on the computer system as so many people did go onto it on 15th. This has not been publicised as it is still in a trial period but if it works well then it should be introduced officially.
hope that makes sense!

ps in relation to the budget changes (up or down!) we peeps at DVLA do not know in advance, only once the Chancellor anounces Budget, same as everyone else.* Rainbow baby boy born 9th August 2016 *

I just renewed my car tax on line before the 12.30 budget - mine worked just fine - no paying for the extra month- says start date will be 1st april. :EasterBun0

I renewed mine yesterday. I didn't have the reminder. I used the V5 and reg number. Payment was successful and it says it will start on the 1st April 2008.
Very happy! Glad you reminded me!0
